F. JohnBon. stated that tho board was doeply indebted to Miss Mulvaney—a former . matron—who at very short notice assumed the duties of matron until a permanent appointment was made. The present matron (Misa M. Lcmpfort') is currying out the work to the entire entiafaction of the board, arid of {he residents. Tho new wing was'blessed and formally opened by His Grace Archbishop O'Shea on March-21. The additions have supplied a much-needed requirement, • and have been fully occupied, while the .alterations made at the same time to th« houso have proved useful and convenient. On the general account tho board , is' pleased to report a great improvement in the financial position as compared wjth the accounts submitted last year, mul'ii'.is confident that, notwithstanding tho high prices of supplies, the position at tho end of forthcoming year will be even more satisfactory. , That the residents appreciate the hostel is proved, bv the ftic-J that few leave it to reside elsewhere in tho city, while there is always a waiting-list of applicants for admission. The board desires to record its thanks to nil who havo taken a practical interest in the welfare of tlhe hostel. and especially to the Hibernian Society—which organised a very successful concert in aid of the building .fund—and the very Rev. He would do his best! to interest the people of his parish in the hostel, and had pleasure in giving a contribution of .£5, to the building fund. ' Following the' meeting, afternoon tea Vns served, after which the visnlors were shown through the hostel. -' Advantage ■ was taken 'of the ' annual meeting of friends of. the Catholic Women's Hostel to present to Miss Kennedy, " of Gladsiione Terrace, a handsome watercolour painting of the hostel building. Miss Kennedy has been a member of the Board of Management since the inception of tho hostel, and has spared neither time nor money in furthering itemterests. Archbishop O'Shea, in making tlhe presentation on behalf of the board', said that they were all deeply indebted to Miss Kennedy and to tho members of the family for their practical assistance at critical times, and the presentation was merely a slight acknowledgment of tho fact, • * Upper Hutt Notes.
