BILLS FOR JUDGES.

GOVERNMENT PRINTING • OFFICE BUSY . '■ THE MINISTER'S EXPLANATION Referring-to the complaint of Mr. Justice Chapman that ho had not hoen supplied with copies of new Acts, the Hon. w. J. Anderson, Winistor in charge of tho Government Printing, Office, stated yesterday that since'tho beginning of the °LJ Uis " 10 Government rnnting Office had experienced one of the busiest years on record, and great credit wnS i '''J O , to tlio staff for . tho volume of■work thoy had accomplished. As soon as a measure',was passed by both Houses and received the Governor-General's aseeflt, it was printed and copies were immediately forwarded to" tha various law sociqties for' tho .information of members of the Bar throughout the Dominion. Members of the legal profession could, on application to the Government Printer, 6ccuro copies of . any Act on payment of a small fee to cover the cost of printing and paper. Towards the closo of a session it was usual for a largo number of Bills to be passed within a short period, and there was no exception this, year, in consequence some littlo time often elapsed • before the whole of the legislation of tho session was availablo in the form of Acts, but tho Minister was pleased to sny -that the splendid efforts of the Governmont-Printing Office staff had enabled itlio whole of the Acts to bo available' over two weeks ago. In connection with the issue of tho bound volume of the Statutes, it was ■necessary i for tho Crown law Office to prepnro indices ai]d tables showing tlio effect tho year's legislation on previous enactments beforo volumes of tho Statutes could be bound. This entailed ' considerable work of a character requiring very careful supervision; Experience had shown that it was not ..possible to print and bind the whole of the Statutes until about threo months after the close of a session. To meet the needs of Judges and tho-legal profession, however, sufficient Statutes wero. printed and bound at the''earliest moment and forwarded to tho Judges' Library and the law societies. lit .this connection it is anticipated that ovor 250 copies will he distributed before -the: Government Printing .Office closes down for the Christmas and New •Year holidays, and in spite of, the fact that this.; year's volume was almost a record in point of size, within three days of the passing of the necessary tables by the Crown Law Office, fifty bound copies of tho Statutes .were issued/

In; conclusion, t'>o Minister .said ho regretted that Mr. Justice Chapman found it necessary ; to make liis remarks, and stated that a copy of tho Offenders' Probation Act was supplied by tho Justico Departihont on. November 1G for the Judges! information to the liegistrar of the Supremo .Court, Wellington. However, in order that tho Judgos- may bo in possession of the Acts passed, arrangements were being mado by the Hon. K. P. lee, Minister of? Justice, for copies of Acts, when printed, to bo forwarded to all Judges personally at the snmo time as they were circulated to the law societies. The'!members of the'legal profession had only to make application to the Government Printer when they also would be furnished with copies' on payment of the cost of same.
