COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meoting of the Wellington Competitions Society was held last night. TJie Rev. A. E. Hunt (president) occupied the chair, and among tfcse present was the vice-patron of the socieiiy Mr. J. P. Luke (Mayor of Wellington.) . The Mayor congratulated the society upon its success. He had been deeply impressed by the opinions .passed by competent judges upon the quality of the work .performed at.the last competitions. The society was. fortunate in its presi-' dent, and its other officers. •'The president thanked the Mayor on behalf of the society. , The' annual. Teport and balance-sheet were-adopted. . The principal items in tho statement of receipts- and payments were:—Re-oeipts-rDonations. -E296; subscriptions, .£275; takings at door, v£1023; entrance 'fees.'ißlol. Payments—Rent, .£402; fees, salaries, and judges' expenses, -.£598; prizes. The balance-sheet showed an accumulated fund of X 566 155., and no liabilities. "The substantial balance realised," 'stated Mho annual report will be used for tho development of tho society/a work." One or two members expressed the view that as sonio competitors at the last competitions had found themselves in ilhe judges' bad books on. account of tholr selections, it might be well to ae< fine moro exactly what was' wanted Ln certain of the'classes. It was suggested that a conference of teachers of elocution might be able to afford Mho' execulivo assistance in this matter. The incoming executive was instructed to consider the advisability of commencing evening' sessions at 7.45 o'clock instead' of. at 8. The mooting did not, however, appear to bo very much in favour of a. change. . ~ In 'connection with a statement in the annual report that His Excellency the Governor-General had consented to accept, the position of patron of the society tho president informed tho meet-, ing that His Excellency had said ho hoped t'o bo able to present a medal himself for one of the classes in the next competitions.'
