CRICKET
THI3 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The sole selector of the Wellington representative team (Mr. D. M'Kenzie), in submitting his choice, has asked for a ti'ial match, to bo -played on the Basin Reserve' on Saturday next, to| give the players selected some practice under representative mntc'h' conditions. The publio will then be able to form some idea of the first teiim selected this season. The opinion in cricketing circles is that tho selector has made a good choice, and the team pickcd is one. of the strongest representing the province for many years. The team is strong in,batting, every man being a reliable bat; it is a gocd, safe iuihhiir side, nnd there is plenty of bowling talent. In the selection it is a pity that the province does not possess a cowl left-handed 1 bat and bowler, as a left-hander or two would be most serviceable in theso fixture?. S. Uric? is the first captain selected, and is the best player for the position, and it is to bo hoped lie will remember to make full ihc of the slow bowling at his command,• which he has ■ not always done. Herewith is appended a few notes of tho personnel of the tcimi:— Hiddleston, J. S.—Dashing bat, whose representative batting is always ahead of his club performances. Good mediumpace bowler. Excellent field. Middleton.—Hard-hitting bat, steady, niodium-paco bowler, who uses his head nnd varies pnee with judgment. Safe catch, but could exert himself more in the field. Burton, IT. 10.—In form, ono of our best .sll-round batsmen. Very steady, with plenty of defence. Sound field. M'Uirr, H—Dashing bat. His stay at the wicket meaiiß very o.uick scoring. First-class fast bowler and brilliant field. Bviee. S J.—The captain of the team. Our leading fast'bowler. Good for runs, especially when things are bad. and is a very sound field. . Lambort, A.—Fine batsman of the free dashing order, should open the innings. More tha* a useful change howler. and exccllont in the field.
Baker, George.—Probably the . best fieldsman in tlio team. Very safe bats--11:1111, who should Ret more runs than ho does.
Schraerfcr. T3.—Still tho colt of the team. Good batsman, with sturdy defence, and plenty of patience. Safe field. Hutcliinps, .T.—A good all-round man. Steady 1-nt, who can lie relied on at a pinch. The bp.«t slow bowler in the team mi'l a safe field.
Phillips, E. jf.—Pino balsmnn, and when set scores quickly. Fair cliajigo howler, swings in nicely from tho off. R«liahle field.
Warne, W.—This year's find n« * wicket-keeper. Stands up to all fast stuff, and' takes the. ball beautifully. The prettiest bat in the team, and should make lots of runs in these matches. Fair change bowler.
Donosrhue, A.—Twelfth man. Good allround batsman and fine field. \ The foregoing' gives a fair idea of trie capabilities of every player selected and the team will carry with it tho best wishes of every enthusiast in the forthcoming fixture with Cnnforhurv on December 25, 27, and 28,
