UNIFORM PASSPORT SYSTEM
FORMALITIES TO BE SIMPLIFIED.
The International Conference on Pawports convened by the League of Nations n October (states the correspondent of the. "Morning Post') decided to recommend that formalities for the issue of passports should be simplified as much as possible in futuro and that the fees charged should bo winced to a strict minimum. At present tho tecs range from 10 dollars to .foreigners proceeding to the United States to a franc or two lovied by certain European countries. _ Tho' conference aleo considered that in futuro there should be in all countries only two types of passports, ono lor persons makinir prolonged journeys or long stays abroaxl, and th» othor for single journeys and short sojourns, lie forms to bo adopted, it is proposed, should bo tho same for all countries, the passports to be printed in the language ot the country by which tho document is issued and in French. Tho delegates also discussed the possibility of dispensing Willi passports in the caso of voyages between countries bordering on each other. It was laid down that all passports should have a duration of two years and that the visa should ordinarily bo good for twelve montlhis, with, tho power to grant a visa for shorter periods in exceptional oases where holder of the passport has tho intention of staying only a limited period in the country for which the visa is granted. But the holder of a passport who desires to live moro or less permanently abroad would require during tho lifo of Mb passport to apply onco only for the renewal of the visa first granted.
