HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER SCHEMES Numerous subjects were discussed at a meeting of the Council of the Central Progress Leaguo. which was held in tho Dominion Farmers' Institute Building Inst cvninK. ilr. C. 31, I.uke was Jn the chair. Reporting on hydro-electric activities, the secretary (Mr. G. _ Mitccll. SI.P.) Btated that he was satisfied that at Mangahao the Department were pushingon with, this vork «s fast as possible. Thjy had been, delayed considerably on account of bad weather, also on account of the machinery, which should have been' here months ago. not having «r----rK'ed This pofio'f bad been promised in three years. The. secretary would visit tbe worlds fn the near future and report. Regarding WaikareAionna, J23&.000 had been"pined on the Estimates for tli,p railway from-Waikohupu to Wairoa, which would serve this work.. A promise had been made that 1000 h.p. would bo available (500 for the works development and SCO for the AVairoa ppople) in eighteen months' time. It was hoped that the full development of this power would be pushed on with all speed. The secretary also stated that lie was in communication with tho Department in connection with their promised survey of Rotorua. 'Whatever may happen to retard the progress of .public works in our country." concluded the report, "wo trust that nothing "will ho allowed to interfere with the vigorous development of i'Jicso hvdro-e'.ectrin. resources. They stand first in" the interests of the people and our country to-day." Regarding the Lake Rotorua scheme, Mr. Will Lawson, secretary of the -Marlborough Development league, explained that the difficulty lay in the inability, so far, of the Government to secure the services of an engineer to undertake the survey. His league was considerably exercised in the matter, and if the State d : d not shortly make aji appointment, it (the league) would provide, an engineer to do the work on it? own account. Tho report was adopted, and tho meeting went on to discuss ether matters, which are reported in another column.'
