GROUP RIFLE MEETING
ENIOR CADETS' DAY AT TRENTIIAM
EXCELLENT SHOOTING BY THE ELDER BOYS
Tho first day of tho annual prize meeting organised by tho A T o. 5 Area Group Rifle Association was Saturday, whan the matches for Senior Cadets were fired. The entrioj totalled 650, comprising 300 boys over, sixteen and 350 under sixteen. The number of competitors outcred frpm tho training ship j\mokura was 47.
The weather conditions at Trontham wero almost perfect for shooting, and tho Cndots of 16 years and over, wlio used the .303 S.M.L.E. rifle, mado remarkably good scores. In the first match, for instance, 17 prizes wore awarded, and bcciuiso tho second prize-money could not reasonably be subdivided into smaller amounts than half-crown.*, five competitors wero "counted out," and had to go without a prize. In this ono match thero wero 11 entrjnte who made the "possible". and 1T" wno enme within a point of it.
The younger boys fired with the miniatirPßriflo (.22),jind such was tho quality (TTtile ammunition, and perhaps of somo of the arms as well, that boys who had splendid records as marksmen did not even gain places at this nieeling. Tho jagged tears in some of tho targets plainly indicated, that many bullets had gone through sideways. In these circumstances tho competitors were to be pitied. A special train took most of the competitors to Trontham in the morning. Shooting commenced about 9.30 a.m., and beforo 5 p.m. tho eight matches scheduled had been completed. A substantial lunch was provided for the hoys by lady members of tho National Defence League. Following are the results of the matches foi Cadets over sixteen:—
