WEEK-END CRICKET
TALL SCORING ON THE BASIN RESERVE
EAST'S FINE DISPLAY
There was an excellent display of batting on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon in connection with the senior competition, and ilho comparatively largo crowd of spectators in attendance were for the first time this season treated to something approaching classical cricket. Tho match was between East and North, and it was a batsmen's wicket. East opened, and it was not until 6.30 o'clock that tho last wicket fell, tho innings closing for the' handsome total of 353 runs. • Baker and Dind ■ opened, and .Robinson bowled the first over, which ithowed two "wides" and a "no-ball." 'ilhe bat6mon <juickly got the bowlers' n.ieasure, and batting steadily they registered a total of 95, ac which' junctnro Balker put one up to Hallam. Boundaries had been frequent on _ Ode part of hot Si men, and Dind had given a chance at 38 to Robinson in the slips. Schraeder came in at the fall of tho first .wicket), and ho and Dind rattled up tho runs fairl.y quickly until tho score board showed 113, when the latter was given l.b.w. to Middlcton's first ball. Hulchings, senr., then partnered Scraeder, both 'batsmen treating all bowlers alike. SchratUer, who opened scratchily, gave a chance at 35 to Robinson, but he' hung on. till ,he> was well on tho road tfo his century T when ho hooked up a slow ball from I'atfison to Hallam behind tho wickets.' Four for 271. Hutchinson was the next man in, and at 294 was bowled by. Ashiloiid. Up to this stage seven bowlers had tried tlhoir luck, all with indifferent sticcess,' and none of Che batemen had i opened out except to . looso stuff, Briuce joined Hutchings at tho fall of tho fifth wicket, and shortly afiter his aril ival his partner was run out, after having contributed very materially to the itcore. Hutchings, junr., was the 1 next mmi ion the sceno, and he and Bruce both gave/'a. fairly good acount of themselves, bi tro re they were dismissed. The "tail," lwwever, infused to wag, the last four 'batsmen on the list compiling only 12 nous. North, who did not commence th cir innings, fielded poorly, tho work of iishford, a new comer from Wanganui, biling a bright exception. Thorndo a, playing Hutt at the Huff ground, In! thoir first effort compiled 159 runs, of winch total Wane was responsible for a, creditable 64. Other players to reach double figures wero: Doncghuo (18), Currui hers (13), Christopherson (12), Moore (11), and Garrod (10;. In Ihe bowling section,. M'Girr and Aldersley shared the wicketei When stumps were drawn Hutt had sbored 133 runs for three wickets. Tho winnings,' however, opened dis-. astronsly,° iDondhffo being dismissed by. Plant wheii 11 had been scored. Aidersley, bis successor, partnered Hughes and carried thb total to 22, at which stago the latter was caught in the out-field. A cou.olo of' overs after M'Kay's advent,, AldeTsley fell a victim to. Christopherson. M'Gur joined M'Kay, and the two, who soon .got nicely "set," remained at the crease until the call of time. The' partcnrsliijn realised 1.05. The .Petone-Old Boys fixture, which is played '<it Bctonev promises to be interesting. Old Boys went in first, and from the outs.et. were subjected to a series of disasters. • Tucker and Ronaldson opened, and two 'ittins had been scored when the latter placer was caught hohind the sticks —tho second to last ball of the second over. Bull followed, and an over later shared the eaane fate, Cate again effecting a neat catch. Lambert joined Tucker, 'and 6even .runs were added, when the latter sent one into Cato's hands—the wicket-keeper's third catch in succession! Barclay, the ncut man, survived two balls and gave place to Blacklock, who also failed to break lhis "duck." Duncan, tho next to enter the lists, opened out, punishing Smyrk and rattling up 18 runs in quick time: A slow one from Smyrk sent him to the pavilion. Morton joined Lambert, who a)ppea):ed to bo firmly established, and fell n; victim to Smyrk's next ball. Binnie, th(i next batsman, scored four beforo Rrioe bowled him. Eight wickets had fallen for 52 runs. The "tail" wagged toian «npreciable extent, tho last two wilckets accounting for 114 rims. Birch an<3 Lambert carried on until the partnership had realised 53,' when it was broken, Smyrk bowling tho former. Knowles-Smith joined Lambert. Continual changes-in the bowling failed to disturb tho combination. Lambert, howover, was at length bowkd by Brice when his score stood at: 96. The effort represented 61 .runs. Intone went in and responded with 26 short of their' opponents' compilation. M'. MiehoHs (30), Cate (23), Pinlayson (22), and Borrows (not out 19) were the chief run-getters.
