The cable message appearing in the Press of New Zealand notifying the results of the Senior Empire Essay Com petition for the Earl of Mcath Cup suffered such serious mutilation in transmission that it was made to appear that tho cup is offered for rifle shooting, whereas the competition, which is open to all sc'hools of the Empire is an intellectual test in essay writing of Empirewide'interest. The competition was instituted with the object of fostering the Empire spirit by the Earl of Meath, who offered a silver challenge cup, to bo held for a year by tho school represented by the winning essayist, with n five guineas personal prize added by the League of Empire. This year the winner is 11-. A. Locliore, of the Waitaki Boys' HighSchool, a son of the .Rev. ,T. A. Lochore, of Auckland, who selected the second of the alternative subjects sot by the authorities. lie wrote on "In Praise of the Emjiire," being a literary valuation of patriotic prose and verse frpm the Elizabothian ago till the present d'ay. Previously the cup lins been won by competitors in India, Canada, and Australia. The first winner was an Eton College boy, and last year llhe successful essnyisi represented ft school in England. On a previous occasion, in 1913, the cup was won by a Waitakian.
