A boating fatality occurred in the harbour this afternoon, in whi.ch a young man named John Shepherd, aged twentysix years, fourth son of Sir. S. T. Shepherd, of Tyne Street, Oamaru, lost his life. It appears that oue of tho Oamaru Boating Club four-oar crews, of which Shepherd was stroke, wns out training in tho harbour, and in rounding a bend the boat was swamped. The crew left the boat, but seeing that Shepherd was in distress his mates kept him afloat until help arrived from the shore.-. Shepherd was visibly distressed, and had collapsed before rescue, and although every effort was made to resuscitate him he expired about an hour nnd a half later. Shepherd went overseas with the Eighteenth Reinforcements, r.nd saw three years' service, and was severely wounded. It is thought that a gas attack he suffered had undermined his powers of resistance, and that he died from the shock of being thrown into the water.
