SAVE THE CHILDREN
"MONEYS ARE'URGENTLY
REQUIRED."
In view of the appeal that is now being made to the public on behalf of the "Save tho Children" Fund, the Mayor recently cabled direct for information from tho High Commissioner in London. He has received the following reply from Sir .Tames Allen:— . ■ "Please inform the Mayor of Wellington (in reply to his telegram of November 9) that moneys are urgently required by tho Save tho Children Fund and Imperial War- Relief Fund. Over .£40,000 has been received from. New Zealand for the former fund, which, is distributing same through ■ local agencies under approved scheme. The Imperial AVar lielief Fund has been organised to combat, ' through local' distributing agencies,-gen-eral, distress and. disease. A special ty-. phus campaign will be organised provided funds aro available, but only ,£35,000 received up to date for all purposes. They estimate their administration" ch&rges at 10 'per cent., whilst cost of local agencies may amount to an additional 15 per cent. I consider theso excessive, and if funds are forthcoming from New Zealand will endeavour mako similnr arrangements as with Save the Children Fund." The important feature about tho message, according to the Mayor, is the positive assurance from the Dominion's own representative that money for the "Save tho Children" Fund is urgently required. Mr. Luke expressed the hopo that the public would respond literally to the appeal to bo made to-day. ■„,
