The New Zealand Sculling Championship was rowed on the AVairnu Fiver this afternoon between W. Fogwcll (holder), and P. Hannan (cliallenger). Thero was a 3-knot current and a strong head wind against the rowers. Hannan won the loss and chose the fnside position. From a splendid start, Hannan drew away immediately, and soon obtained a two-lengths lead. This order obtained till the first lx-nd was reached, when rough water was met with. Both were rowing a good swinging slVoke, and Hannan still kept tho advantage. Nearing tho Wairau shed, Hannan struck a snag and momentarily lost ground. . Coming to the half-way point. th» wind and current drove the boats to the southern side. Hannan was hero four or five lengths ahead. Getting too close in, Fogwell fouled the bank, _ which chcckeS bis nrorcress. Recovering, ho Parted after Hannan,. reducing the gap to about a couple of lengths. Both men had quickened their stroke, Hannan responding to every challenge. Coming into smooth water, Fogwell' started to move up, rowing a quicker stroke.
