The Minister of Defence (Sir -Henton Rhodes) returned from the south on Saturday. • The Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. i*. Uate-s) has arranged to visit the Mnngahao power works to-dav. Ho will return to Pnlmerston to-night, mid will proceed to-morrow to Dannovirke. Ho expects to return to Wellington on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. The Minister of Justice (Hon. E P Lee) returned from the south yesterday. nis Honour Mr.'. Justice Edwards will not leave for Napier today as originally intended, but will prolmblv leave for Wanganui on Wednesday. Mr. Justice balmoml will lotva for Napier to-day.
Mr. Phil-pot Crowther, who took a leading part in organising the New South Wales Fruitgrowers' Association, and who has been in Wellington since Tuesday last, left for ltotorua last night. He will afterwards visit the South Island. Nomination of a Moderator for next year was. taken at Saturday's sitting of the General Assembly of the'Presbyteriau Church of New Zealand. The clerk reported that the Presbyteries had nominated the following for the office:—Revs, W. 0. Robb (Blenheim), C. Murray (Matawhero), G. Miller (Ashburton), A. Sangster (Duntroon), Stinson (Tunnm), and Professor Hewitson. The cleric intimated that both Mr. Murray and Mr. Robb bad since withdrawn. Professor Hewitson had been nominated by thirteen Presbyteries and the remainder of the candidates by ono each.. Dr. Erwin (Christchurch) proposed that Professor Hewitson be the Moderator-elect. Dr.- Cameron explained that on account of ill-health Professor Hewitson did not seek office, but he was willing to accept nomination on the understanding that he could withdraw if his health did not improve. No other names being proposed,' Professor Hewitson. who is master of Knox Collego, was declared Moderator-elect.
The remains of the late Captain Harold Edward Owen, of tho New Zcnlnnd Medical Corps, were interred at the Soldiers' Memorial Cemetery, Karori, on Saturday morning with full military honours. The funeral was well attended. Amongi those present were Colonel JI. J. M'Lran and other Defence officers'. A detachment from the Medical Corps at Trentham noted as pall-bearers. The deceased, w!lo was 57 years of age, had been a patient at the Trentham Military Hospital for some time. He was a native of Devonshire, England, and came out to New Zealand 23 years ago. Prior to joining up with the Expeditionary Force, in which one of his sons was serving, he was n medical practitioner in Wanganui. After service at Awapnni and Featherston he preceded overseas with the Twentysixth Reinforcements, and returned to the Dominion in March of last year. Subsequently he engaged in practice at Rona Bay. The late Captain Owen leaves a widow, two sons, and two daughters.
