INFORMATION PROM THE GOVERNMENT. ' Br .Telegraph—Special 1 Correspondent. . ■ Masterton, November 19. At /to-day's meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce a reply was received from tho Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coate3) regarding . tho Government's intentions concerning the proposed- llimutaka deviation. - Mr. Coates wrote as follows:—-"Owing •to.tlie excessive pressure of work during session ' time—both on lihe Department and myself—l have been unable so far 1o go into this matter at all thoroughly, but will take an early opportunity of doing 'so immediately the session has olosed." .
Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P., forwarded a letter, stating that lis was In communit'cation with Messrs. G|.- Mitchell and A. D. M'Leod, MfP.'s, over the same matter." The chairman (Mr, A. C. Major) said l that, personally, he thought it a waste of time, discussing the question furilher. It. would be years hence before anything was done. A -member: The deviation was not mentioned in the . Estimates. . The best thingois to receive the letter. Mr. Richard Brown suggested'that now tho session, was over it would be a good policy on "the part o{ tlie chamber to acknowledge the letter, and ask ilhe Government to forward further, information, as' speedily as possible. Mr. Brown's suggestion was embodied in a motion, which was carried.
