POLICE AND CIVIL CASES

Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., dealt with the police business in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. Of Miriam Patricia Seeker, a young woman who was sihying in a boardinghouse in Willis Street, it was stated that she created a disturbance in the place, and threw a bottlo at a window, damaging the same do the extent of £i ss. The police were sent for, and while a constable was present she assaulted the landlord.. As tho assault was of a. trivial nature, she was convicted and discharged on this charge, but for damaging the window she was ordered to pay 25*. and expenses 12s. A seaman' named Stephen Coffey went to the Terminus Hotel, and on being refused liquor became abusive, and made use of obscene language; furthermore, ■he threw a bottle which struck a leadlight valued at £o. For making use of the obscene language he was fined 405., and on the second charge he was ordered to make good l the damage done, and to pay 12s. expenses. Cofley was also fined sa. .for drunkenness, t.he default period being fixed at seventeen days on all charges. For having committed a nuisance in Waring-Taylor. Street, Duncan M'Kay was fined' 205., and for drunkenness he was fined ss. For drunkenness. Thomas St. Clair was fined 10s. ,the alternative being fortyeight hours' imprisonment. Edward John Garvey, convicted of his fourth offence for drunkenness, and for commit)ting a breach of his prohibition order, was fined in all 30s. »

Walter John Hamilton w.-v? convicted of stealing a sack, valued at 2s.' Gd., also a whip, valued at ss. -He was seen to take the sack from a motor lorry belonging to the Colonial Motor Company, and when questioned by the police he was found! in possession of tho whip. A newsagent named William Joseph O'Dwyer was charged with issuing valiio less cheques. It was stated thati ho issued one cheque for ,£5 to John Paul D'Arcy, and cheques for and JBIO to John Alexander Boss, licensee of tho Grand Hotel. The evidence showed! that the cheque cashed by D'Arcy, assistant in Hallenstein Bros, shop, was on the' Bank of Australasia, Masterton,' and the cheques cashed by Boss were on tho National Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North. Documents wero produced to show that O'Dwyor had' opened an account with the Bank of Australasia, Masteribn, with a deposit of X'o' and a few shillings, and issued seventeen cheques -Lv a total of .6283. In September last there was a'balance to has credit with the National Banlj, Palmerston North, of .£2 12s. 3d., and against Ahis twonty-five cheques were issued for over X2SO. It was alleged 'that O'Dwycr, who had several previous convictions; \was wanted in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Palmerston North. The accused admitted issuing the cheques, bull stated that certain moneys duo to him were to have, been paid into his credit with tho bank at Masterflon. The Magistrate regarded this as a very poor excuse, and sentenced O'Dwyor to six months' imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months' reformative treatment. CIvifCASES Mr. W. G. Bd., costs £2 145.; same and Ross and Glendining, Ltd., v. W. Winchcoinbe, .£53 Bd., costs £1 lis. 6d.; same and Mucky, Logan and 1 Caldwell, Ltd., v. E. K. Danvers, d6HB 65., costs £6 19.; same, and Abbott, Oram and Co. v. J. Habib, ,£SB 18s. Gd.. costs .£5 Os. fld.; Alexander Boss Engineering Co., Ltd., v. J. Hardie and A. M'Williams. £64, 12s. 2d„ costs .£4,175. 6d. In a judgment summons case' C. P. Williams was ordered to pay. C. B. Femmol .£5 18s. lid. by December 2, in do fault three days' imprisonment. TENEMENT CASES. Mr. J. K. Hunt, iS.M., dealt with the the. tenement cases. Alexandria E. B. Pay wns ordered tb give up possession of a dwelling to Francis Sidoy by December 3, and to pay .£2O 10s. rent, and £3 Is. costs. J. F. Forrester was ordered to givo up possession of premisee to Alfred M. Guy by Decombor 17. Thomas Androw Riddel! is to give up possession of a dwelling to" Henrietta Margaret Hogaii by Decomber 19, and to pay M Gs. rent and £2 Gs. costs, , December 19 was tlhe dato fixed for Robert Gerald Makin to vacate a dwelling in favour of the Public Trustee, and to pay £\ lGs. costs. In this case the Public Trustee was acting on behalf of a watersider who had purchased tho dwelling. Tho facts were thati tho watersider, finding his five-roomed-houso too small for himself and his wifo and nine children, agreed to purchase the larger houso for XI7OO from tho Public . Trustee Ho was unablo to complete the purchase-, because until ho was able to vacato his small houso ho coidd not givo possession fo tho purchaser and get his money, and he was debarred from doing that because ho could not get possession of tho house purchased' from the Public Trustee.
