One of tho best-known members of the polico force in New Zealand, Inspector Cruickshnnk, of Greymouth, is retiring at tho end of the year. Inspector Cruickshnnk was born in Scotland, and joined the police force as a trooper on tho Otago goldficlds in IS7B. Jn, 1880 ho was transferred to Dunedin, and after spending ten years there went to Lower Mutt, where he took charge. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1900 and transferred to Wellington, whence lie went, two years later, to Dniineyirke as officer in charge. While stationed at Napier in 1911 lie wns ma<lo sub-inspec-tor. Subsequently he was stationed at Dunedin, Timaru, and Auckland, until, in 1915, he was promoted to his present position of inspector-iii-cliarge of, the West Coast police oTsir'fct. Inspector Cruickshnnk has to his credit such difficult pieces' of police work as the apprehension of Bosher, tlie Petone murderer, whom lie brought to book single handed. The inspector intends making a trip to Scotland in January to visit relatives and friends.
