AMATEUR ATHLETICS
NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION,
The twpntv-nintli annual report of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association states that the past season has seen the resuscitation of the sport, and, under the circumstances, the association might well congratulate itself on the wonderful recovery shown in all the centres, with the exception of Southland, which is still in a dormant state. An effort is to ho made to improve matters in that, district during the coming season. The Now Zealand cross-country champioiSfhip was contested in Chnstchurch on August 28, under the auspices of the Canterbury Centre. Teams from Otago, Canterbury, and Wellington competed, Wellington proving tho winning team, with Otago second. C. Fry*, of Otago, ,von the [individual championship for first man. past tho post, which corned with it the association's standard gold m At the Olympic Games at Antwerp during July and August, Now Zealand was represented by Messrs.. H. E. W.il-sln-(nuraier) and G. Davidson (sprinter) The other members of tho team were Miss Walrond (swimmer) and Mr. A Hndfietd fcculler). Although/ up ugainst tho world's befit, all tho performers did remarkably well, each ono getting into the semi-finals of their respective events. Tho various centres aro actively ongaged in reorganising tho sport, and new clubs nro in course of formation m all tho four centres. A new record passed by the council was that of 6. Harvey, who succeeded in reaching lift. 3iu. in the pol e vault. Tho balance-sheet shows a credit balance of J!18 2s. 10d., which, considering tho 'great expense incurred in sending a team to tho Australasian championship, and in paying numerous outstanding accounts, dating back for several years, must bs considered quite satisfactory.. It is intended, if practicable, to invito at least two of the winner.? at the Olympic Games to visit the Dominion during tho coming season.
