Tho trial cominenccd to-day of Frederick Spencer Easlon, of -Foxton, on a charge of perjury arising out of evidence given bv liim in a civil case heard at Fox ton, when lie claimed .£2OO on a cheque given by Wright, a horse trainer, for the purchase of the racehorse Stevens in .1911 from Easton, The cheque not having been presented till July last, was returned by the bank as a "stale" cheque. Mr. llacassey, Crown Prosecutor, in his opening address, said accu.-jeii was a wealthy farmer and succcjStiii iMeehorse owner. Thcp were five cuunlt: in tlio indictment, but really only ' two important points to consider. One 'iras whether statements wore uttered, and the other was whether, if uttered, they were intended to mislead tho Magistrate, The caso is proceeding.
