THE REIMS LIE EXPOSED
. .. 1 ■ At last we lave the truo story of the bombardment of Keinis Cathedral, and from a German, says th& London "Morning Post." That unfortunato Saxon General, Baron .Hau*°n, has written his rominiscences of the first buttle of the Mnrno, and accusea tlio Prussians of having deliberately bombarded the city without tha slightest justification of military necessity. Baron Hansen was commander of the Saxon Amiy, and after his Hussars had entered the city on its being evacuated by the Trench, General Buelow, commanding the 2nd Prussian Army, gave the orilor fo_r a boniburdment by the artillery of the Imperial Guard. No attempt was niado to spare the Cathedral during the bombardment, which lasted three-quarters of an hour. General Hansen protested, and received a reply that the bombardment whs ordered as' reprisals for the detention of a Prussian parlemeutaire by the French. The Snxon General placed l . i(o faith in this "excuse, and, indeed, it was established by General Sueckow, who on his orders made a careful inquiry into the matter, that no Prussian parlementaires had ever visited Ueims. Later on, in view of the world-wide indignation
aroused -by this act of Prussian savagery, General' Buelow invented the story of' the French observation post placed on one of the Cathedral towers. Thus it i« now established that Reims Cathedral was bombarded by German artillery at a time "when German cavalry wus quartered in the. city. Little wonder that the Saxon General says. fliaE the Pru>siiiu Buelow is responsible "for tlio discredit arid hatred niiieh were heaped in consequence ii|ioa 'Germany." .
