METROPOLITAN SHOWS MANAWATU AND CANTERBURY COMPARED. 1 By Teleeraph—Special Correspondent. Christchurch, November 12. Now that the ilannwatu and Canterbury Metropolitan Sliiows are over for tho season, | it Ls a fitting timo to mako n comparison between them. There has been a friendly rivalry for many years, and in some matters each could learn something from the other. The manasemcmt of tiie Canterbury Show has considerably improved since last year, but the association has not yet been nblo to carry out its schieme for honsing the whole of the sheep and cattle, as is tho case at the northern show. It is hoped that this will 'bo accomplished before the next 6how. • Comparing the entries for tbtese two shows for this year, JlHnawatu claims nearly 4000 entries against Canterbury's 2000. However, when such extraneous sections as dogs, technical' school work, and others of this kind are taken off, it is found that of exhibits which are generally considered to bolong to agricultural shows Canterbury has 1829, against the northern show's 1029. In live stock, Canterbury has an entry of 782 sheop, against tho northeners' 310; while cf cattle Mana. watu had 520 to the southern 330. Canterbury leads in liorees with, 300, against 205, and it has 118"entries in dairy produce, a class which was, Tery poorly filled at Manawatu. In sheep, Canterbury had an extremely fine show of merinos, English' L«icostora, and Border which are practically unknown in tho. North Island, where coarse wools predominate. Lincolns were only a small entry, but' of much better totality than at.Maniwntu, Roinney Marsh'were'not present in the numbers they were at Palmerston North or CavtertOri, but ,the quality was equally good, if not hotter. Southdowns were naturally a much better entry than at northern shows, and on the whole the quality was better, but il was somewhat bewildering to find a number of different types represented. Shropshire. Downs were an excellent class, and it is sin-prisinß Umt this breed is not more cultivated in the north. Corriedales were a strong and excellent class, being represented by ; over 100, against half a score ftt Manawatu. Halfbreds, which are unknown in the North bland, were another very good class, anrt the fat sheep were just about on a par with those at Manawatu, m spA* of tte fact that sheep from this quarTer claim the cognomen of prime Canterburyilthoaigh Shorthorn cattle we not: so well represented here as at P alm "sto" North, the quality all round, both in tho beef and milkiutf sections, was much 'bettor. -Herefords and Aberdeen which are features at northern shows, wero unrepresented, while the Kero not, quite as Rood asi ttioab at Mamwflfu .Terscvs were a small ana jniriy trood class, but they could not hold a candle to the exhibition at Palmerston Nortl«i which could hardly be beaten in the Dominion. Ayrshire* aro evidently not popular in the south, 'as the entries were small and tho quality on the whole below that at tli.e northern show. •Thorn wero only about a tMnl as many Triesians as at Manawatu, hut the quality in the aged bull classes would be hard to beat anywhere, though Palmerston North certainly tallied m tho femalo classes. The Clunv Farm, Wellineton scored in two-year-old bulls, and also took swond and third prizes in yearling heifew. The fat catHe hero were .mucin better than at North Island shows ■ this season. ; With the amount of sericulture R oin ß on in, the South, lsland, it was not surprising that draught, horses weve one of the features of the Canterbury Show, nnd their quality indicates that every wdenvour is Heine made to keep up the quality of the breed. It is therefore to the. credit of the North Tsland that a representative S tho Donald Estate, Fcatherston, BueHvnfi's Favourite was declared winner of the championship, "JM 1 ;. 2 5 ," first in class for'horse-frith foul of his nrosenv. It was unfortunate that Ouentln Donald's (Feat Won} two-year-ii Lif T?nrf»l Favourite,- which - "warde<r th«' chammonsMp at Carterton, met with an accident in beinc shipped from Wellington and was he would certainly have earned off first honours.
