"SAVE THE CHILDREN"
CAMPAIGN '.FOR WELLINGTON KUNI). A'bout SO persons attended a meeting of tho General Committae of tho Wellington "Snvo tho Children." I'und,. which was held yesterday afternoon., Mr. J. L. Hay who was'voted to tho chair, explained 111j arrangements that had been made for launching the appeal, which, had as its object the alleviation of distress and sickness amongst the starving children, of Central Europe. The appeal would be concentrated so far a* possible into one week, from November 20 to 27. Friday, November 20, had been definitely fixed upon for the street day. All' churches and organised bodies had been aslwd to appoint at least five of their members to help in the campaign. Mr, W. H, Foster had undertaken to organise the fund so far as the school children were concerned, and Miss Dorothy'Saunders had promised-to turn over •to the committee the whole of the proceeds from her annual breaking-up recital. Concerts in aid of the fund would be held in the Town Hall on Saturday, November 20, and Monday, November 22. The Mayoress reported good progress in connection with thy arrangements for the street collection, which ' would bo largely a ladies' effort. At the suggestion of the meeting-Mrs. Luke undertook to organiso a street stall at Brooklyn to be run by the ladies 'in that 6iiburb.
The honorary secretary (Mr. It., Hill) reported that live or six teams of business men were being organised to canvass tile business, community for subscriptions, apd they would be ready to start- thefr work on November 22. All the churches ■in the Wellington .district; were, being asked to take up.a special collection on Sunday, November SI, and the- Boy Scouts were being approached to. make a liouse-to-housj distribution of literature on the subject. The committee., desired, if possible, to "clew" the whole fund up at tho end of the month,"so that any money raised could be cabled, to.. the children-.as ..a Christmas box from' Wellington. ''.:'.' ' .
The' eTlairmn'n stated' that-the' coinmitteo was absolutely (satisfied that the need of tho starving children of Centra) Europe was as vital as it was urgent', also that the administration of tho fund was very effective. A gratifying feavnr* of the campaign Was the undertaking of .the' Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association to organiso a team of canvassers.
