The superior flavour of Smyrna fijjs is ascribed to certain Asiatic insects which effect a more perfect fertilisation of tho lloivers of tho lig trees in Asia Minor than is commonly effected in other countries. The flavour appears to depend upon the number of ripened seeds in the fruit. For gome time tho United Slates Department of Agriculture has been importinc quantities of thojo insects from Asia to California, and it is hoped that they will establish themselves there, and Improve tho flavour of American flgg.
