VICTORY FOR ORATRESS

MERMIN'S WELCOME STAKES STEWARDS' HANDICAP WON BY ARROWSMITH Br Telegraph—Soocla.l Corre»pondent. Chxistohuroh, November 6. The Canterbury Jockcy_ Club's Metropolitan Meeting opened to-nay. There was a heavy wind and raiu storm during tho night and the mornlug was dull and threatening. The sky cleared before tho first race, but just before the race, for tho Cup commenced, a cold, easterly wind set in. The course waß in capital order, and thero was a very large attendance. Tho totalisator handled £97,000, as compared with £72,265 on tho corresponding dav last year. All started in the Spring Hurdles, General Petain being an odds-on «irdcr, with Lord Nagar and Kohu next in public estimation. When they settled down. Gcueral Petain and Lord Nagar were acting as pilots, with Kolm in the rear. Down the back tho leaders maintained their position, but across the bottom Gamecock moved up after a faulty jump ot the second last fence. Ho took charge entering the straight, and ran in a very comfortable winner .from Jack Symonsi. who stayed on well. The favourite was a poor third, and then came Lord Nagar and Kohu, -with Good Hope beaten off. There were numerous sfcratchings in the Spring Plate, Isabel being a better favoiirito than Cashmero and Royal Mae, who were evenly backed. Jarz, Petunia, and Askari were in front for half a mile, when the favourite moved up, and. a furlong from home she and Petunia were in front of Royal Mac and Insurrection. Over the last half furloug Cashmere came faßt on the outside, but ho ran in on top of tho favourite, and both horses were.pulled up. Cashmere crossed the line a length clear of Isabel. lusurrection was third and Royal Mac next. The crowd hooted tho vdnncr. but there is Ilttlo doubt that the occurrence- was accidental. The stewards met at once, reversed the placings of the judge, but took no furtlier action. Cariibrnc was the only scratching from the Linwobd Handicap, and the Stead fillv Truthful, was made an oddß-on order in a field of sixteen. She began fairly well, and was in behind the leaders to the homo turn, where she took cnargo and looked to bo winning, but Barleycorn shot out irad headed' her, and Prince Hal got through on the rails. In a good finish Barleycorn won by a bare length, while Prince Hal headed Truthful. Battlo Scene, who showed a lot of pace for six furlongs, was fourth, while Ben Bolt ami Twinkle finished closo up. Kilrush was the only defection from the Oui" I» 'ho birdcage Nightrnider seemed tho fittest horse, and Royal Star also stripped well, but Vagabond, lyiaribbon. and Oratress all looked as if a race would do them good. Glen Canny and Eose Pink moved down short in the preliminary, while Kilgour was not as free as .usual. When betting commenced Oratress and Imaribbon were singled out, and it was soou seen that they would finish first and second favourites, while the bracketed pair was third favourite. When they reached tho course proper. Bcngeroop, Warlike, nnd Kilgour wcro the most prominent, but at the stand Tenterheld had taken charge, and, followed ny Warlike, ho led Bcngeroop and a strung' out field down the back. At the halfmile, Imaribbon, Vagabond, and Oratress wcro well back, but they then moved up. Entering tho straight Tenterfield and Bengcroop were still in charge, but two furlongß from homo Imaribbon ran to the lead. Almost immediately Oratress joined her, and the pair were hard at it for the last furlong. Ridden right out, Oratress won by half a length, with Bcngeroop two lengths away. Then came Bonny Maid, Royal Star, and Vagabond. Palcßtrina, Limelight, and Believe were the only scratchinga for tho Welcome Stakes, and the unbeaten Hermin started a hot favourite. The Hawk led Morinin on to the course proper, when Gray sent him to the front,, and ho won nicely. Meteorite was a poor third, and then came Winning Hit nnd Mixture. The winner will be- given a run in the Juvenile Plate on Monday, but will not be started again at the meeting. Malaga had rather an easy contract Hi the Apprentices'- Handicap,, for which ho was sent out a good favourite. Algidus led from Castellan till a furlong irom home, when tho favourite took charge and won eaßily from Cas.tellan, with Algidus close up. Foo Chow and Adopted were the next to finish. The big sprint event was rather a soft snap for Arrowsmith, who started a good favourite, and, taking charge a lurlong from home, won easily from Chimera, with Maioha In third place. Radial was fourth. „ For the concluding event Starland waß backed like a certainty, while there was good money for Demand, but the others were neglected. Nautical set an impossible pace for ai-x furlongs, when the two favourites closed up, but Demand got a bad check. Bonetter then took charge, but over the last bit Dainty Step came fast, and in a good flnißh won by a neck. Kilkee was third, nnd Demand uext.

NOTES ON THE RACING

By .Tclcgraph-Sneclol Correspondent. m, . - Auckland, November 6. ' The racing was, on the whole, very interesting, especially the desperate s'trugf. le t . w , ee ? VolD and Some Boy II to> the. Mitehe son Cup. and the hard-loucht finish for the Welcome Stakes between Toa Tane and Loyal Irish. When the field in the Trial Hurdles set it-led down to business Eathlin was in command, and about five furlongs from home ho and Battlotide were well clear of the others. At the last hurdle but one Eattletlde came to grief, leaving Eathlin with a* substantial lead. Otara, came strongly at the finish, but Eathlin won comfortably. Golden Petal just beat Shell Shock for third place. The Groat Northern Guineas was nicely won by Listowel. Landslide and Geoffrey made tho pace and .kept command until tho entry to the straight, when Listowc! put in a strong run, and finishing well, beat Landslide by a couple of lengthß. Lucullan, who was well fancied, but never dangerous, ran third. The Welcome Stakes resulted in a great finish between To* Tane and Loyal Irish. Nnumatere led for the greater part of the distance, hut when headß were turned for home Loyal Irlsli and Toa Tane sorted themselves out and raced home stride for stride. Tho Hunters' Steeplechase provided a most exciting con'dtisTon trctween J'estce. Totara- Jack, and Papatoro, who finished In that order. Totara Jack led nearly all the way. Tlie other two challenged Fim half a mile from home, .and they fought It out desDerately to the post. Tho Shorts Handicap was won by Inah from start to finish. Queen Abhoy made a great effort in tho straight, but could not get on tcrmH with the leader. Dovclet was u good third, Esthonia being fourth. The Mitchelson Cud was the best race of thu day. From a goo 3 start Some Hoy II and Lord Kenilworth were the first to show In front, with Demagogue and Gold Kip in close pursuit, Volo being well placed. Somo Boy , and Lord-Kenilworth maintained their lead till the turn lor home, with Tinopai and Volo moving up. Lord Konilworth here began to fade ojv:\v, and Volo ranged up nlongside Some Boy it An exciting race up fTic straight resulted in a win for Volo by the barest margin from Some Boy 11. with Tinop... and Uncle Ned next.

Tho Hobsun Handicap was tho surprise of tho day, tho winner turning up 'ji the little fancied Prince C<irl, wno cazio through at the distanco and won by a couple of lengths from Tinohoro and Miss Leslie

In tho Flying Handicap Woden was the first 'p show out. and led into the Btralghi. Royw Abboy .put. in a challenge nt {.m distance, and succeeded In defeating Woden by half a length.
