LECTURE AT ALEXANDRA HALL
——^—• Under tho auspices of the Social Democratic Party Sir., P. Hickey Inst nipht delivered in the Alexandra Hall an address upon tlie significance 0f... the American Presidential elections. Mr. Hickey said that President Wilson was returned to office at the last elections bS causo ha was a declared -pacificist. In the end he abandoned is pacific principles/yielding to the pressure of the business interests of Ameria. which found the market for their munition's threatened by the German submarine' blockadn. Then instead of stating frankly that lio was yielding to influences too strong for him to resist, Wilson made a host of hypocritical professions regarding what America •'mould stand for duriilrthe peace negotiations. Germany, said Mr. Hickey, was. not a defeated nation when . she agreed to negotiate for peace; she agreed to negotiate because of tho assurance, riven by Wilson, a; representing America, that she would 'not be to humiliation. At the Peace Conference. Wilson permitted his "fourteen points" to bo lorn to shred?, and he returned to the country with Kis vasue plan for,tho foundation of the league of Nations. This, according to Mr. Hickey, nobody wanted. The vote cast for the Renubl'eans at tho recent elections, said. Mr. Hickey, was to a'great extent, not a vote cast for the. principles that the Republicans stood for, but a vote cast irgainst Wilson in revenge for the disappointment he had caused tho GermunlAmerlcans, the.lrish Americans, and the progressive element.
