OTAGti V. WELLINGTON.

The annual telegraphic match between the above, clubs was. commenced on Saturday evening, Mr. Talbot, Superintendent of Telegraphs, being able lo place ;i wire at the dispell of the two clubs at fi p.m. The operating was in the capable hands of Messrs. Goodwin (Dunedin) and E. C. Hands Mr, W. Toomath umpired for Otago here, and Mr. Gillies looked after Wellington's interests in Dunedin. The local scrutineers were Mrs. tlyles and Messrs. Toomath, Bock, A. E. Jessup, Wring, E. S. Taylor, and H. A. Ward. The local club won th« toss and had first move at the odd-numbered boards. The run of tho play was as follows (tho Otago name being given first in each instance):— Hoard I—L: D. Coom'bs (Otagoi champion) v. W. E. Mnsnn (X.JS. champion). The former utilised Philidor's Defence. The game.; is adjourned in a very even state.

Board 2.—A. \\. O. Diivics ( captain) v. H. J. Barnes (captain). Queen's Pawn Opening. Davids sacrificed a bishop for two pawns and a hot attack on the castled king. His play was brillinjit and .at move 18 Mr. Barnes scut liia resigna'Hon, coupled with hearty congratulations. Davies was at his best, his forceful play being greatly admiral. Board 3.-0. Balk v. A. W. Gyles (Petroff Opening), an even game.Board 4.—Clayton v. W. Mackay (Giuoco Piano), even. Board 5.-Rev. Friberg v. Kelhng (French Defence), even. Board 6.—Amhnan v. S. Gyles (Queen s Gambit Declined); even. Board 7.-S. S. Myers v. G. P. Anderson (Giuoco Piano), even.

Board B.—J. J. Marlow v. H. H. Jame9 (Centre-Counter game). The former won the exchange and two pairs. Jlr. James resigning nt a late hour, when, barring blunders, the end appeared' to be only a matter of time.

Board 9.-G. D. Wright v. H. - G. Leo (Ruy Lopez), even. Board 10.-A. Ward r. T. Foley (Four Knights' Ganfe), .even. Board 11.— H. H. Henderson v. D. Purchas (Giuoco Piano), even. Board 12.— N. Fulton v. W. C. White (Biri's Opening), even. Board 13.— W. H. Allen v. S. Faulknor (French Defence), even. Board U.-Grigg v. T. A. Fletcher (Giuoco Piano). Mr. Grigg is a pawn to the good, with the preferable game..

To sum up, Otago has two wins and Ml advsvntoijs at .Board' 14. As aU the other games arc in a more or less even state, it will be seen that there is every likelihood of Otago's scoring a thoroughly well-deserved and popular win. Mr. Barnes has taken part in all eight matches between these clujjs. Saturday's gaiuc was his first loss in this fixture. Some very interesting finishes should be witnessed when. the match is concluded on Saturday next.
