HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow were hold yesterday by the various brolterß. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, submitted an average catalogue of all classes to the usual attendance of buyers. Competiti*! waß. very dull, and ,in sympathy with the Australian market showed a declino of 3d. to 4d. per lb. on medium. Heavy-weights suffered most; the decline showed from sd: to 6d. per lb. Inferior lots were competed for at late rateß. Messrs. .Levin and Co., Ltd., report that bidding was very slack, buyers appearing to have little confldcnce in' the market. As compared with last snlo, there was a decline of: Light ox and cows, from Id. to ljd.; heavy 01, from 4d. to id.; calfBkins, Id. to 2d.; inferior sorts brought scarcely a bid. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report that bidding was anything but brißk. Sound bides realised about 4d. .per lb. lower than last sales' rates. Damaged hides and calfskins were practically neglected. This commodity was practically unsaleable. Measrs. Abraham and Williams. 'Ltd., offered a fair catalogue to a full bcnch of buyers. Bidding for all grades was exceptionally flull, and prlceb offered were in moßt eases much below pre-war rates, consequently very little business resulted. Tallow showed an improvement, and the firm cleared practically all they offered. The N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report that the market was wenk, and prices showed a sharp decline. Comparing prices with the previous sale, ox hides show a decrease of 4d. per lb., while cow hide, yearlings, and calfskins were down on an average of Id. per lb. The tallow milrlret was somewhat brighter, and better prices were realised as compared with last sale. The Wairarapa Farmers' Co-op. Asscviation report a seriftus declino in the prices of nil classes of hides and calfskins. Many lines were passed in. but as present' advices from Australia show prices to bo lower there, apparently there is no immediate prospect of improvement. AU inferior lines of hides were neglected. Tallow: Prices were on a par with previous Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited; report', having received the following cablegram from their head office, under date of November J-.—"1880 casks of tallow offered, 620 casks sold; good nominally unchanged, inferior dualities, sellers at'2s. to 3s. decline. Buyers aro holding °Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.. have-received the following cablegram from their London house, under date November 3;— Tallow: Wo ciuote present spot values for the following descriptions :-Fine mutton* £1 15b. per cwt-; seed beef, £3 12s. per cwt.; mixed, £2 19s 6d. per cwt.; limited demand. The range of prices was as under:Hides: ox. sound, 701b. and over, 5Jd. to llSd.; ox, sound, 591b. to 691b..
