FINAL STAGE OF MARRIAGE AMENDMENT BILL POLITICAL EIGHTS FOR CIVIL r - : SERVANTS ■ THE COST-OF-LIVING QUESTION ' . The Marriage Amendment' Bill readied its final stage in Parliament yesterday. The House of Bepresehtatives, early in 'tho morning, accepted the disputed clause in the form recommended by a special committee, tho provision for imprisonment being deleted. The Legislative Council objected to the amendment, but a conference of managers representing the two Chambers resulted in the acceptance of the amended clause. ' Tho "-cost-of-living- question was mentioned again in the House, and the Prime. Minister stated that he did not believe that the cost was still rising. He proposed to lia.vo the ollicial figures examined by experienced men. The Railways Amendment Bill, dealing chiefly with the new scale of wages, was discussed at length. Tho Prime Minister slated his willingness to insert a provision allowing'members of the railway service to be candidates for seals in Parliament. His motion on thisfyunt was ruled out of order, and he undertook to move it when the Legislature Amendment Bill was before the House. He was willing to let it apply generally to the Publ-ic Service. - The "AVashing Up" Bill, which contains some eighty miscellaneous clauses, was put through Committee almost without debate. The Minister of Lands then announced that there were forty more clauses to come. The House adjourned until to-day, but tho session is certain now to extend into next week.
