James Westrupp waa , charged, on the information of the Marine Department, with plying for hire in the . oil-driven ' craft Maid of Italy -without earning a certificated master or engineer. , The Collector of Customs (Mr. W. Iteveriish) explained that th; law required do- , fondant to.carry either a certificated master or. engineer, and on the occasion in , question he carried, neither. For. some timo defendant had been going to Bell i Island, three or four miles from Nelson, and hud engaged Mr. Eeid as master. Advico has been received by the Union Company that the British-India steamer, Hatiegara has been fixed to load generalmerchandise at Calcutta this month for the four New Zealand main ports, via Singapore and Samarang. The llatiegara is expected to leave Calcutta about December 1. KAURIFROM NEWCASTLE. The 'Kauri arrived yesterday morning^ from Newcastle, and berthed later at the Railway Wharf. She has a' full cargo of coal for discharge here. The vessel • had an uneventful trip. Captain M'Lean is in command. MAHIA TO LOAD.
