SPORTS AT MASTERTON
By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Hasterton, November 4. Tho sports and carnival which were postponed from Labour Day owing to wet weather were held to-day. Tho -Heather was again unfavourable, and the track was very heavy for the athletic events. A feature of the day was the procesßion of tradeß exhibits, which paraded the principal streets .prior to the Bports, which were held 'in the Municipal Park. A silver shield, given by Mr. 0. E. Dannicll for the best industrial display, was won by the cooperage department of tho Waingaw't Freezing Workß. Discus and javelin throwing were introduced in the sportß programme for the first time in the liVairarapa, and crcated much interest. In a eatch-as-catch-can wrestling match for £50 Jl'Kcnzic (Masterton) defeated Joe Gardner (Nciv Zealand light-weight champion), after a bout laßting Bix minutes.
