BRITISH MANUFACTURERS
INCREASED CAPACITY FOR • TRADE. - By TeleKra.ph—Special Correspondent. * Palmerston North, November .2. In' the courso of an address given before the' Citizens' Luncheon Club to-day. Mr. R. W. Dalton, British Trade Commissioner, stated that manufacturers, in Great Britain had developed a capacity for three times their pre-war output. They had lost the trade of many European markets, so that they found it necessary to go 'into an entiro reorganisation of the overseas trade. Another remarkable aspect of tliei v r. increased capacity for trade was that the relative cost of production was smaller, in spit-j of reconstruction and labour troubles. British traders had long since discovered that sound and straight dealing was the only way to develop custom, and it was realised everywhetj;, even in Germany, that British gcods meant quality and a square deal. Since the war several largo contracts had gono to Great Bri--tain from New waland. This fact and others proved that tho British manufacturer had already recovered in two years the trade lost in the previous seven Stars. The increase had' been largest in thoso trades which had foeon most seriously attacked by foreign competitors. Mr, Dalton predicted that in another two years British manufacturers would again becomo paramount in evtcry department of trade except Tho British Government was doing more than ever before to d/ivelop overseas trado, and tho forthcoming touring exhibition of British goods was an instance of what it was doing.
