DEBATE IN THE COUNCIL'
ADJOURNED "FOR A FORTNIGHT"
The following motion was moved by ' ■ , the Hon. M. Cohen in the Legislative ) . Council! yesterday:— i '•;.. "That, in the opinion of this Coun- ■., q), the time has arrived'when the Government ought to consider the desirabili ...ity of- appointing women police patrols, ~,-the appointment of a woman as col- ' league of the Censor of Picture Films, '■■ and the appointment of women as. Justices of the Pence." Social workers in .'Dunedin .thought that the recommendations contained in j. ' ■ ■ the resolution ought to be acted upon , at once, said Mr. Cohen; From otherparts of the • Dominion also came de- • mands for a change in. the direction indicated. The appointment of policewomen meant protection'for young wo- ■: men against criminal tendencies. In England, Canada, and Australia the value of the policewomen had been tested v and proved. The weakening of home influence was the source of much social evil to-day. In support of the submission that a .woman should be appointed to.assist the censor of films, Mr. Cohen 'said that a score of women could be found in Wellington whose judgment would be accepted by the public without question. Scores of women also had ■ 6hown themselves well qualified to discharge ' the duties of Justices of . the ■ Peace. The Hon. G. M. Thomson seconded 1 the motion. He. claimed that Dunedin, ''$he town in which he lived,'employed more efficient means of combating tlio ' temptation of vice than did the terminal seaport towns of Auckland and Wellington; -where temptation- was more rife. There appeared to be in Dunedin a, greater number of useful-social organisations, than in the other'places.' He i heartily supported the recommendations . contained in the motion. •The Hon. W. Earhshaw moved that the.debate be adjourned for.a fortnight. " He/considered that the "Council ought to . lx- giving itg attention to important leg- : ' islation. • '. ' '" Mr. Earnshaw's amendment went to a division, and -was carried by 17 votes to eight. The division list was as follows: For the Amcntfment (17). Bell Hawk'e ■'..;' •. Alison Mitchelson i Buchanan Moore . Collins ' Patuki Earnshaw . Samuel Fisher Scott Fraser Simpson Garland Tukino 1 ' Grimmond ■" ' ' Against (8). Clarke Izard Cohen Michel Fleming - Stewart Gow • Thomson The fortnight's 'adjournment is quite !. ■ sufficient to ensure that the debate will not be resumed. ' [ A member^lnvitation ''; ,T0 CELEBRATE A COMPLETED ' ■ TUNNEL. "Has ; the Minister of Public Works received information to the effect that the Ohahukura tunnel is now complet- ': ed, and, if so, will he join with me in ; celebrating the occasion?" asked Mr. W. T. Jennings. (.Waitomo). in the House of • Representatives. The .Hon. J. G. Coates replied that he had not re&jived official information of the completion of the. tunnel. If it was not quite completed he would be only too • delighted to facilitate matters so that ho ■ inigM hart- the pleasure of joining the honourable- member in the function he had proposed. TONGARIRO SER COMPANY • PETITIONEES COME TO AN ' v AGREEMENT. Three petitions this session brought ■ to the notice of the House various mat- ' tera connected with the valuable timber rights held by the Tongariro Timber Co., Ltd. The petitions were referred to the Native Affairs Committee, the chairman of -which (Mr. J. A. Young, ■ Waikato) yesterday -reported to ■ the House as follows: — ; "I am directed to report that tho ■committee has heard the representatives of all the parties concerned, and that these representatives came to an agreement which was placed before the com- ' mitteo.
