THE ARBITRATION COURT

COMPLAINTS 01' DELAY.

■ Delay on the part of th;> Arbitration .Court in'dealing with, applications for amendments to awards is frequently complained of by union officials, and it. is contended by them that in the interesls of industrial'' peace 'greater expedition should be'■ shown in giving decisions. The secretary of tho Wellington Enginedrivers'- "Union (Mr. J. Read) stated to n. Dominion reporter yesterday that, his union had applied last May for an amendment of its aWard the 1 basic rate of pay. The Arbitration Court did not Sit in Wellington until July, and 'the application was not heard until the end of that month, when the Court announced that it would deal will the qunstion after it had heard the Auckland enginedrivers' dispute- "The Auckland dispute was' taken on September 21, and it is only on November 1 that an order affecting our award is issued by the Court." added Mr. Read.. "It. appears to nu> that in cases such ns this, whore the right of having the ,baaio rate of wages amended has bsen the Court should deal with tho applications in a more expeditious manner. • Hero'w© havn a case which ought to have' 'been before, the Court in May, and in which the decision should have been given within, say, two weeks of the sitting "of th« Court, but tho wholy thing has been held up for- over five mouths. Tho manner in. which the Court is dealing with these awards as occasioning very great feclinj' amongst the men interested, and is leading to no great regard for the Arbitration Court. It is to be hoped that in the interests' of all concerned, thfe Court will in the futuro show a speeding "up m the way it deals with awards and amendments m order that they may be kept as up to datfe os possible. It has Itecn Assorted that the delay is not (Hie to the members of to Court itself, but to tho channels through which awards huve to before being made public. If this is true it appears time that something, was done to remedy this, disgraceful' state gf aifairs." . 1
