SOCIAL AND PERSONAL ' Mrs. and Miss Laird and Mies Word (Taumarunui) left last week on a visit, to Australia. Mrs. Porcival, wife of Mr, \Y. Percival, for many years secretary of the Auckland Racing: Club, died at her Lome, in Arcadia Road, Epsoin, Inst week. Mrs. Percival, who had reached the age of 81 years, was a native of Canterbury, and was married in Christchurch in the early '50's, afterwards settling in Auckland with her husband. She is survived by Mr. Porcival and four daughters.

Mrs. C. A. Yallance arrived in Wellington yesterday from tho Wairarapa, and is staying with her daughter, All's. Erl Williams, Lowry Bay. Sister Kate XSarmtt (Now Plymouth), of the Now Zealand Amy Nursing Service, returned to tho Dominion by the It.M.S. Tainui, after' five and a half years' absence. Sho was one of tho first group of Now Zealand nurses that left by the e.s. Hotorua in March, 1915, for nursing in tho British Expeditionary Forces. On arrival in England she was ordered to Alexandria, where sho was stationed in the General Hospital for nearly a year. A transfer to a hospital ship in the Mediterranean followed, after which she was stationed at Salonika for a period. Then she was transferred to a liospiitol Bhip .voyaging betwien Mesopotamia and Bombay, where, for six months sho assisted to nurs® tho troops fighting in Mesopotamia. Alter this she did duty on another hospital ship passing butween Bombay, Durban, and Capo Town,' and' theu sho was transferred to German East Africa, first to Daz-ps-Salaam, and then to Liudj and Morogoro, where slio was attached to the first uumalty clearing station, close by tho sceno of fighting in the bush, After somo months at this work sho was once moro transferred to Bombay, and then to Cairo, where sho was nursing when tne armistico was signed.
