Melting Moment was a good favourite in tne i'riul JL'latc, und sao had every chance to win, but Spare" Moment heat her comfortably at tho finish. Tho favourite jumped out smartly, but Sir Walter and spare Moment headed her off. hlr Walter was, first into tho struieht. whero Spare Moment, was taken to tho iront. and won comfortably lroui Molting moment, with situdy Macdouald in tuii'd plac;. liauy biluia was iourth.
Martian Mi6B, Vitella, and Stutter was the order of lavouritisin for the Carterton Hack Handicap. The two last-named led uio favourite into the Uraight, witn Mumble and idcullus handy. Over the last nfty yards the last-twined got up and beat the favourite by a length. Vitella was a length away, and tlieu came btuttor.
The. scratching pea was in great request lor the county L'up, oniy sewn horses starting:, fcycorax and Kuso jfiiik divined puolic lavouriMem. Over the first half-mile the light-weights made play, wiU itoso i'niK and Miss Maid in tlio rear. Down the bacK the lasl-nam.id pair moved up, ana tuey led into the utruight. Here Sycoraot got through ou tho leuce, but ltose Pink finished the best, and won by hall a lungtn lroui Sycorax, with Scornful, who got a bid ruu, third. Doric was prominent all tne way, and finished fourth.
The Komball bracket. Master Boris., and O'llano were oveiuy backed In the Jumpera' I'lat, and tho public were well uu the snot, lor they tooK Dart In the finish, victory resting wiui. U'ltane. who was capably handled by W. loung. Dudy l'onza and (Spangle made tho early running, and. tho tatter was welt out acrosA tho Dottom, but thou Explorer and O'liane cut her down, and she finished feebly. O'ltaue was challenged half-way down the running by Master Doriß, but Iu a, close ftnißh tho light-woight won by a head. CUadful finished well in third place, and Explorer was fourth, There wcro only four runners in the Bumiy Memorial Handicap, tho Komball pair, Dunedin and llokanui, be.ng a better favourite than bweot Memory. The latter led Bonny Briar ai'd Dunedin into the straight,, but once in a line foi home the big colt assorted himself, and lie won with a lot in hand by a neck. Bonny Briar wbb a length away. liek.i nui got on the heels of lmnedin, and came down, giving her rider (Tucker) a, bad shaking. Ngata was the best backed iu the Hack Welter, and he ran a good race, but over the last bit he was comfortably defeated by tho light-weight, Ohlti. Cahfornian and J ilk Kein led for hall a mile, when the favourite and Elcullus took charge. Tho favourite settled Elcullus, but ho could not respond wheu tack ed by Ohiti, and the latter won by a length. Bitters came fast, and got third place, and Elcullus was fourth. Tari waß a better favourite than the Komball bracket in the Open Woltor. Matatua. jumped out in front, and led all the way. Down the back Tan waß up with him, but l:o was steadied on the turn. Matatua came into the straight full of running, and he won 'by a length from Tari, with Risingham the same distance away. Vnsilkov was fourth. Matty and Mill' o' Goivrie were left badly. Scratching!! in the Isst event reduced the field to nine, and the public supported Handv. American Beauty, lankce Dan, and Vitella in. that order. From a good Btart Vitella. Snmarapg. >no American Beauty led to the straight, whore Handy and Yankee Dan oame through, the,former going on to win by a, length. Timidity was two lengths-further back, and then name Vitella.
