NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION.' Mr. C. W. Tanner, hon. secretary of the Nflw Zealand Chess .Association-has received a letter from His' Excellency the Governor-General accepting the' office of patron (to which he was . provisionally elected at the association's annual meetins held in July last). His Excellency . added best wishes' for the success.of .the congress'that "is to'be held in.Dunedin during 'the.'Christinas"holidays' to decide the chess championship of New Zealand for 1921.
OTAGO V. WELLINGTON. ■'■• Thp Otaso Chess Club wishes to play its annual telegraphic match' against the Wellington Club on November 6 and 13. Play will therefore commence at S p.m. on Saturday next, if the Telegraph authorities can place a wir£ at the dis-posal-of this old-time fixture. The Otago team will, it is understood, be a much Stronger side than that which represented the-southern clwb when, playing Auckland, a..few,weeks ago.■■--•.
WATERS'IDEES V. WORKINGMEN'S-. '.... . CLUB.'. ;--• ; A chess match between the .above clubs washeld at ths Harbour Board's X shed on Saturday evening;, when there was ; a good attendance, drcpihj the. very wet leather. Mr. D. Wild (captain of the Watersiders) extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and hoped that they would spend an enjoyable evening. He mentioned • that this was the first chess match between these clubs, and trusted that the fixture'would become an annual one (Applause.) The pairing for the thirteen boards was then announced, Mr. Kelling' replacing Mr. Faulfcnor as the latter could not attend. At the adjourn-, ment for''refreshments each side had notched four wins. Shortly after resuming draws were registered at boards 5 find 7, making the tally five.all. In.the next half-hour the Watersiders, who had a strong "tail," scored at boards 10 and 12. which made victory a certainty .for them. At 11 p.m. the only unfinished game was that at board 2, as- both players had to catch a train, and the result of "ho match .was not affected, they agreed to a draw at a stage wh>re Mr. Lindsay's position nppeared to offer the better prospects. The final score' was thus: Wntersidcrs, 7J wins; Workingmen's Club, 51 wins. Mr. F. K. Kelling returned thanks- for the- hospitality extended to the visitors, and congratulated the Watersiders on winning their initial match. He thought it would be wort* their white to arrange matches with other clu'bs. (Applause.).. 'The sebrfc of Saturday's match is as follows:
