The American fishing schooner Esperanto beat the Canadian schooner Delawanna in the first of three races for the international championship of the North Atlantic, over a forty-mile course. Interest in the races between the Esperanto and the Delawanna has taken on an atmosphere similar to tho America Cup race. The 'Delawainia recently won tho sailing championship of tho. 'Lunouburg, Nova Scotia, fishing fleet, and wms immediately challenged bv the Esperanto, the champion of tho Gloucester, Massachusetts, fishing fl<>et. Each craft is manned bv twenty-live fishing skippers and fisher-folk from the far north of Labrador. They journeyed to Halifax to see the contest. Betting in the coastal cities was keener than in tho Shamrock-Rcsol uto race. Tho winner ,of two out of three races gels a cup and purse.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
