UNREST IN BRITAIN
GENERAL ELECTION. RECOMMENDED
NEW MANDATE DESIRABLE
Sy Telesranh—Press Association—OopyrlgM (Eec. October 31, 11.5 p.m.) „ London . October 31. lie Observer recommends a general election early in the New Year with a view .to dispelling the unrest and mistrust threatening national unity. It declared that the growing restlessness outside Parliament is inadequately represented within it. The temptation to follow dangerous advico and resort to ruinous expedients Rrows stronger, hence the Government's authority is weak proportionately to the strength of its Podia-' mentary majority. There is on ample pretext for challenging its' moral right to govern, and. the difficulties of the administration, especially in the case of Ireland' and the industrial policy, are multiplied accordingly. The trouble is. riot that the Government's policy and programme are in main lines not representative of the by-elections, but suggest on the contrary that the real trouble is that the majority is far over-large. The Parliamentary oppositions are smaller and narrower than the opposition in the constituencies. While not removing the unrest a general election can give it constitutional utterance and is tho only means of restoring reality to politics and dethroning the cynic pessimist and revolutionary." The "OBserver" adds £hat the Government would be stronger for a new mandate.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
