WAIRARAPA SHOW
PEOPLE'S DAY
FURTHER AWARDS OF JUDGES
From our Special Reporte:
Carterton, October 28. ( The Carterton people appenr to be doomed to experience bad weather for their annual show, having only had eight fine shows during a period of W yearn. However, this continued ibad luck docs not appenr to damp tho ardour 'of tho enthusiastic committee of the A.-and P. Association or the- public, which in spite of the rain yesterday attended in numbers which must be considered very large when the unpropitious circumstances are taken into account Bain fell heavily nearly all the morning, making matters unpleasant, especially for the ladies, who attended in large numbers. In spite of the adverse circumstances the show was a most successful one, Hho quality of tho exhibits all through, more especially in live stock classes, being of a. very high order, and the manner in which the committee and officials carried out their duties is an object lesson to many icinsocieties. It is to be regretted, however, that there wero no exhibits from tho South Island, find now that the war is over and things are again ira-mal it would lie n move in the right direction if exhibits could bn exchanged between North and South Island shows, as more especially in sheep and cattle this would be of considerable educativo value.
• Although tho entry of draught horses was not large, but little fault could bo found with the quality. It is satisfactory to note {'hat this is rnoro particularly the case in tho breeding classes on tho male side, but it is to be deplored. that, no brood mares came forward. ■ A mast interesting contest took place for the championship in draught stallions, the contestants being Mr. E. Leddinerton's Tan M'Hae. by the imported Royal Record, and Donald's Kstoito three-year-old Prince Recent, by Bucklvvie's Favourite, and . Mr. 0. two-year-old colt by Alloa's Favourite out of the well-known imported dam Nellie Reid. The result was . that the juvenile won. He is «n exceptionally fine colt wonderfully well put together, with fine carriage, and gives every promise of furnishing out into a useful sire. Some very useful active, plough teams were shown, and the principal feature was that they were all low-set, good sorts eminently useful for hill work. There was a very good display of general utility horses so niseful on t.'ie farm..
Tho only .entry in the thoroughbred section was Mr. G. Neich's two-year-old colt Hymunenl, by Hymestra. out of Tdnlia. and this fashionably-bred youngster gives every promise "of furnishing out into a useful sire.
The breeding hack classes were but poorly represented, no stallions coming forward.
Tho hacks o.ud light harness horses were one of the feature*? of the show. There was keen competition in oil classes, .but the majority of the animals nro well known in tho show ring, and the ne\y aspirants do not five promise of keeping up the high standard set in tho past, and this is probably due to the popularity which tbe motor-car has attained jib a means of locomotion, Jfiss Mailer's Bachelor won the championship for harness horses, and Mr. 11. Booth's Lonely that for hacks. The ponies wero n very good section. It is '■surprising in a district which produces so much wool that there was practically no competition in the fleece wool classes. The Romnev specimens, however, were very fine indeed. Mr. P. M. Reynolds, of Carterton, showing a couple of fleeces typical of both the coarser wools of the breed, wTiicli were a valuable object lesson to itie less expert breeders.
