IMPORTANT AMENDMENTS TO HOUSING LAW

DEBATE ON MEAT TRUST ' ' CONCLUDED .

The Legislative Council, nt tho request of the Attorney-General, reconsidered the Gaming Bill in committee yesterday, and reversed its decision of last week regarding totalisntor permits. The Bill is now restored to the form in which it left the House of Representatives, and provides that tho Government may issue extra perinit6 on the recommendation of the proposed commission.

• The report of the Stock Committee, recommending that a meat export license should not bo issued to Messrs. Armour and Company, was before the House of Representatives again. It was adopted after an amendment proposing that the report should be referred back to the committee had been defeated by 51 votes to G.

A long- debate took place in the House on the Mining Amendment Bill. Members were interested particularly in the proposed extension of the time nilowed the mining companies for the installation of water drills, which were ordered by Parliament last year ■as being necessary for the prevention of miners' disease.

A Housing Amendment Bill was introduced during the evening. This Bill contains .important new provisions relating to the restriction of rent, and it touches the housing problem at other points. Some additional protection is given to landlords as well as to tenants. •
