CRICKET
THE QUESTION OP CLASSIFICATION
The weokly meeting of (the Wellington .Criciet Association was held last night, Jlr. G. G. Wilson presiding. A letter was received fiom the City Coiri'oil stating that the preparation foo for wickets on v tho city reserves would be J2l. per wicket. ..Tlie secretary p'ointed out that this wouiJ'mean an extra cost to the association <-f about JJ7S- or more. Including the rental of the Basin Reserve, thn associi'ion would be paying about .£(>00 to City Council. He understood that, the Football Association paid .£.l per ground per season. Thus, while the I'ootbail Association only paid £10 per year as reir.'l of Anderson Park, thn Cricket Ac sociation would be paying ,£OO per season for the same ground. ■ Mi-. Wilson expressed the opinion that il was a case of "the willing horse paying." .'During the war'the association had net asked for a rebate on iln liabilities to the Cily Council. >' Mr, Comrin: Cricket is expensive enough now, but these increased charges will make it too expensive. One member said the charges would have to be passed on, and several others mentioned that the senior subscription for their clubs, was 355. per season, and' Is. per Saturday. "By these extra charts they are going to kill the game,' remarked' one speaker. "It rill liiean cutting out the, young players, and nlakinir the game niore exclusive," .said Mr. Comric. ."Only those who can pay will lie able to play.'" It was decided to writo to the Cit.v Council objecting to the increase in the fee. • ■ , Classification of Players. Some discussion took place:ou the propo:Ml. to classify certain players as senior. Thorndon and East clubs had wrilto'i to the association, stating that thev were prepared to play the three men' concerned in their 6enior teams. Mr. Murphy objected to the 'propo-'al ■to classify the playere because ho was of the" opinion tliat they should not be token out of a team for which tlier had played' for years.' The chairman thought that players 6ho.iii be classified as seniors on their merits alone. He know l.hat it was a liarisiiip to p'.ay in a strange team, but if 't. was for the benefit of cricket as a whol?, they should classify tuesc pia-v----ers" i.s senior. A motion to classify Messrs. Henderson; de Muth, and Binnie as senior players lapsed for want of a seconder. An iimindment to include the three Murphy lli-os..iii the motion also lapsed for want of a seconder. ' " Tho secretary moved that a classificntion committee he set up to consider the mattai-. Tho motion was carried, (but when the time came to select tho members of the committee a deadlock was reached. Various suggestions were made, and all were lost. It was then decided to take the next business, it boin? mentioned that as no committee lidd been elected, the Ma-iagement Colnmittce had the right to classify players.
