SPRING MEETING
MERMIN'S WELLESLEY STAKES * GASBAG WINS BIG HANDICAP The weather was flnb but windy for tho Opening day of tho Spring Meeting of ■the Wellington Racing Club. There was a very, largo crowd, which included the Governor-General and siiite. His Excellency mixed with the crowd, and was a frequent visitor in the birdcage and in • the stewards' stand. He displayed great interest in the two-year-olds, and congratulated, M r , ■\v r . Q. Stead on the sueteas of Mermin. , Never has there been 'bettor racing and closer finishes at Trentham, and the work of the handicapper, Mr. H. .Coyle, deserves special mention. • Mermin, winner of the Wellesley Stakes, Teas a trifle lucky aa ho .jumped out clearly, while Rational received a bad bump at the barrier. The eleventh-hour scratching of Arrowsmith for tho Shorts Handicap was adversely commented upou, and it is to form tfcj subject of an inquiry to-day. ■ , The totalisator figures for the day totalled £75,842 as against £51,133 for the corresponding day last year, Prince Ferouz, Dissertation, and Win,liing Hit wero baokedin that order for the Taita, Handicap. The big field was lined, across the course the. whole way, and it:was difficult to see if any of the runners had a lead. Capping Dav a,nd Leithileld wero prominent early, and over tho last furlong Prince Ferouz. BackBheesh. and The Hawk joined in. Prince Ferouz. seemed likely to win 100 yards of! the post, but Capping Day' stuck well to her • task. Over the last pinch Winning Hit and Backshcesa"Joined In, and •In an exciting finish five horses crossed the line together. Tho judge gave'the Verdict to Capping' Day by a half head from the faßt-flnishing Winning Hit. Backsheesh wa* placed third/, and Princo ferouz and Tho Hawk next.
. Several of tho runners in the Walnui Handicap were heavily backed. A sood start was effected, and down the' back Motuihi and Printempts led a punched field. Entering the straight Dainty Step camo fast- on the outside, and Vagabond then came round the field. Iniaribbon shot through'at the distance, and in a great finish she beat Vagabond by a head. Walton was placed third and Daiuty Step .was . next. . .
_ Isabel was a good favourite in tho Kimutaka Handicap, and after a very (dose finish she got tho verdict. At the start Samovar, Adopted. Oountcrstroke, and Wanigan were in. th.e van, with the favourite in the middlo of the field. Under pressure, the favourite oaught tho leaders in the Straight, but" Warrawee cot through on the rails, and most people thought ho had won. Tho .iudge placed ißabel first, with Warrawee eecond. Malaga was placed third and Samovar fourth.
i Amythas and Rose Wreath were the only defections from the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Glen Canny was a , good favourite, with Kilgour and Gasbag also well backed. At the start Bonnie Heather led Gasbag, Kilgour, and :i Sunohed-field. Down the back the leading positions were the same, but Tontnrfleld. 80-Peep, and Demagogue moved up. Across the bottom Bonnie Heather and Gaslia? led 80-Peel), Kilgour, and Kilrush. Entering the straight, Kilgour ran to the leaders, but he could not hold his posttlon - At the distance Bonnie Heather and Gasbag were fighting it o"ut, and after a great struggle Gasbag got the ver- £}«* by a head. Kilrush finished fast in third place, and then camo Kileour. Karo and Tenterfleld. Glen Canny and Oratress were disappointing. The winner m a, greatly improved Borse, and he promises to play an important part in the decision of the Now Zealand, Cup. Scratchings were numerous in-tho Hack Hurdles. Ladogeur and llaniahera being tie public fancies. FalstaJ mada play for six furlongs, with the favourite in the #ar. Down the back Maniahera took oharge. and he led Into tho straight from .lalstaff and Ladogeur. The leader easily retained his positiod in * the run homo and won easily from Falstaff. Ladogeur was .three lengths away, and then came Orane and Meltchikoff. »? w er Pj wa JL a , biß loveo t0 B « the two-yeari-olds that contested the Wrilesley Makes. AH eyes were on Mermin, wiio looked an improved colt since Hastings, and no fault could be found with Rational. Mermin finished up tho bnt«, £a, or tne paw, and was the more fortunate at the barrier. After the half ,:jouruey had. been covered, Mermin and iulsome were clear of the others, out Rational came very fast, and in a great .finish he caught and beat Fulsome, but could not reach Mermin, who won by a length. TO-DAY'S FIELDS
The fields are again on the large Fide for to-day, and it looks an. if the racing will he up to the ihigh standard of Saturday, with results just as hard for totalisator investors. No fewer than twenty-four two-year-olds have been accented for in the Roseneath Handicap. Form points to Prince Ferouz and Backsheesh aa likely to run well, and the supporters Jof Dissorrt.tiou will doubtless again entrust the good-looking filly with their support.
Manihcra did bo well on Saturday that he is euro to have ii big folowing in the Second Hurdles.
There, is a Rood Held of hand-cap horses in the hip mile event. On her form in the Racing Club Handicap DoPeep is entitled to consideration, nnd to are Royal Stag and Imaribbon. The Chokeboro representative Is such a good finisher that he is bound to show up. Several of tho hncka aro engaged in both tho Tararua and Ruahine Handicaps, but they aro not likely to start twice. Blackhead, Adopted, and Samovar may be prominent in the Beven-furlongs event, and Ngnta, Valley lioso, nnd Barleycorn should do well in the Ruahine Handicap. , Tho Champion I'latc will bo contested by a splendid field, and. public support may go to Amythas and Humbug in that order. ~ . ,', . Mermin and Rational should again fight, their Welleslcy Stakes duel In tho Juvenile Stakes. , „ Solfanella, Delight, and Early Dawn may all bo in demand for the Jiainai Handicap.
