RACE DAY AT TRENTHAM

SOME OE THE FROCKS. TWe Trcntham racecourse on Saturday attracted a great many people twin town nnd tiie surrounding districts to witness the day's races. Although windy, dusty, nnd exceedingly unpleasant in the city, . the weather .was all .that could b,j wished for at the racecounj;, and to every, one who did not tako adversity too greatly to heart the day's outing wita exceedingly pleasant. With its smooth lawns, its freshly budding beautiful English trees, and gay flower 'beds, Trcntham looted its best,. and those who wero' not entirely absorbed in the racing, found much to flight their eyes when turning aside to view their beauties. Some very charming frocks were to be seen on Saturday, and noticeablo among them several coal-frocks, which were decidedly becoming to their wearers. One of cream gabardiny?, loosely caught into the waist with a plaited silk corded girdle, with heavy woollen embroideries bordering tho hem of the skirt, was very pretty mid graceful, and'with it was worn a c»am velours hat, with brim sharplv upturned ell round, and ornamented with a bouffant arrangement of small'white feathers in separated clusters. Another prettyfrock was of n. (felicate silver grey, with white "lace-edged turnover collar and •cuffs, and small grey mushroom hat, trimmed with grey and delicately toned mauve flowers. Coats nnd skirts were, of course, largely worn, and when of navy bine were frequently smartly strapped with black. A noticeablo figure was a tall girl wearing a broadly striped, almost royal'blue and grey coat and skirt, with small Mack hat trimmed with vivid velvet flowers to tone. Small hats were deservedly popular, and being mushroomshaned, w;ere becoming to their Wearers. Their Excellencies tbie Governor-General nnd Viscountess .Tellicoe, with their young daughter, the Hon, Lucy, attended the races, JJ-er Excellnncy wearing a navy blue coat and skirt, white furs, and a small navy blue hat, niushroom6haped, with crown trimmed with navy bluo flat velvet flowers. Miss Harcourt was wearing navy bluo, with hat to correspond, and black fox furs. Mrs. Gillon woro navy blue and bjack crepe de chine, corsage inlet with ribbon in Oriental colours, and a black three-cornend straw hat, turned sharply off the face. J. Riddiford was in a draped black charmeuso frock, trimmed with fringe, and n widj> black hat with osprey plumes. Mi's. C. Elgar was in black, with n deep sable, cape, fringed with tails. nnd' small black hat, with crown circled with upstanding paradise plumes. Mrs. Eric Riddiford, navy iblue coat and skirt strapped with black, pale canary coloured vfest, and canary coloured hat, with: navy' blue trimming, and furs; Mrs. W. Turnbull, terra cotta coloured costume, the long coat bordered with fur, and tam-o'-shanter straw hat to match; Mrs. 'Moorhouse, . black coat and' skirt, and wide black feathered hat; Mrs. Vivian Riddiford, cinnamon brown coat and skirt, with furs, and a> dark brown soft velvet hat turned sharply off the face; Mrs; Arthur Duncan, navy blue coat nnd skirt and cherrycoloured straw hat trimmed with ribbon ' to match; Mrs. Macarthy-Ecid, pale grey coat and skirt, black hat with the upturned brim lined with white, covered with flat black ospreys; she also wore a • white fur stole. Mrs; George" Hume' (Featherston); navy blue coat and skirt, with striped collar and cuffs and wido dark navy hat; Mrs. J Crawford, stone filuo frqck, with juncommon striped effects and cherry red tam-o'-shanter straw hat niched with''ribbon; Miss Joseph, brown coat and skirt and brown hat to correspond; Miss Massey, nigger. brown coatfrock and wide brown velvet hat with white brim; Mrs. H. Moss, black, with a black hat; Miss Speedy, wine-coloured coat and skirt' and wide flo'wer trimmed hat; Mrs. J. Armstrong (Eawke's Bay), powder blue coat and skirt and fawn hat; Mrs. Christie, grey costnm'e and lilac trimmed hat; Mrs. J. Duthid, navy blue striped coat and skirt and wide black hat, with touches of. yellow; Mrs. .J. Kennedy, grey coat and skirt and grey tocme; Miss M. Kennedy, -lime-coloured frock, with green hat; Mrs G. Didsbury, dark grey costume, black furs, and Iblack fei.thered hat; Mrs. D. Eiddiford; black, with furs and black and henna-coloured toque; Miss Duncan, navy blue coat and skirt, with dark red waistcoat and black velvet hat, with a white ostrich feather; Miss Ida Duncan was in cream; finished with heavy wool embroideries and cream hat; Miss Lucy Brandon, terra cotta coat-frock' and black velvet hat; Mrs. Bies, grey-costume, and wide hat trimmed with a violet band; Mrs. Marsden, fawn costume and brown toque; Mrs. Longuet, navy blue, with' a black bat 'trimmed with*tiny clusters of. flowers; Mrs. C. Tringham, dark blue and. white check costume and wide hat trimmed with navy blue 1 ribbon; Miss Mackersey, grey costume and blue hat; also Mrs. Shand, Mrs, Wylie, Mrs. Eawson, Miss Konnedy, Mrs. Diggs-Smith, Mrs W. F. Ward, Mrs. Chilman, Mrs. Cock, Mrs. Fii6sell, Miss Jean Eussell, Miss Miles, Mrs. Heading, Mrs. Harty Mrs Gough George, Miss June Clifford, Mrs. u. Fraser (Christchurch), Mrs. C.
