THE TURF
WELLINGTON RACES
TO-DAY'S MEETING AT TRENTHAM.
1 Bl GiENCOE.
The Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which opens at 'lreivtham . to-day, is expected to be a record fixture for this time of the year. lhe hue weather of late has left the course and i lawns in perfect order, and visitors to l Trentham will bo delighted with .the I surroundings, and also with the various improvements which have been carried , out since the July gathering. • In order to cope with tho expected increase in the number of passengers by ; rail, more trains have- been put on. the i specials will run from Lambton station every few minutes after 9.4.0 a.m., and . patrons are advistd to travel early. llncing will commence at noon witii the Taita Handicap, a four-furlongs event for two-year-olds. There is a very big field, engaged, and though there are no winners in the list, therq are several place-getters, including Prince Ferouz, Tommy Rot, Mountain Peer, Humboldt and' Dissertation, whilo Martial. Dawn has done a bit of racing, and is well seasoned. The favourite may be Prince Ferouz, a good-looking colt by the imported Feramorz. He is a nice mover, and will have Gray on his, back. Tommy Rot is a verv quick beginner, but he is backward, and may not quite run it out. Dissertation is a smart beginner, and finished very close to Fulsome in the Hastings Stakes. • The powerful Chokebore stables is represented by Winning Hit. who has not had a race yot, but gallop? well in private. Trespass, who has not been produced since he vanquished Amytlms at Wanganui will have a large following in the Wainui Handicap, one mile. He has been working very freely at Trentham, but the weight may find linn out. Vagabond is coining back to form, and so .is Maioha. who Tan a creditable race in the Flying Handicap at Hastings. Daintv Step was never so well as now, but Demand may do better after a race. _ • ' ~ The Rimutaka Handicap, one mile, will give the apprentices an opportunity of showing their skill. B?n Bolt, may •be first choice with the public, but Isobel will also have a good following. Ngata 'shaped well at Masterton, but a 71b. penalty will iput him near the top ot the handicap. A likely one with no weight ,to carry is Ohn, who was noticed well up in the front rank at llasTho'Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, is likely to be a fast-run race and the paco may find out some of the top weights. ' Amythas, with 10st. Sib, can hardly be expected to beat the hunter weights, and the same remark applies to Karo. 9st. 81b., who is without a race, and Kilrush. 9=t. 41b., who has now got a good horse's weight, but who, nevertheless, is well' fancied in certain quarters. Glencaiiny may be the favourite. He has won four races on end, and public form is what weighs with the public. A leading horseman was very anxious to get tho ride on the son of. Pistol, but O. Reed, who has ridden him in all his races, will again have the mount today. Red Ribbon may not be ready, though/her trainer fancies her, but Oratress should show, up if she is to lustily her inclusion in the New Zealand Cup field, for which' she is one of the shortpriced division. Demagogue may be troubled by the distance. Of the others, nothing reads better than Gasbag and Kitaror. The first-named has donesplendid work since arriving here, and Masterton form points strongly to Jtugour, who was never hitting out so freely as at the airesent time. Gasbag has had 'three races, so the distance should not trouble him. A win for either oi the last-named' pair would put them well in the market for the New Zealand Cup, in which, with their penalty, they would still have a nice racing weight. The Wellesley Stakes next comes up for decision. ' Though there v a big field-in the race the choice of backers may be : narrowed down to three of the runners, viz., Rational, Toa Taua., and Jl'ermin. Supporters of the last-named were very confident in the middle ot the week.' and the owner of the colt was especially optimistic, but it was noticeable that Mr. W. G. Stead displayed quite a lot of interest m Rational on Thursday morning, and.he was present when tile Wanganut and Masterton winner ran half a mile in. Msec., with his rider pulling on him over the last ifwo furlongs. Toa Taua » a big long strider that will be suited by tho straight course. . There are fifteen acceptors in the First Hurdles. Kohu is a good performer, but he has a, .very big. weights and one miitake in his leppnig will prove costly. Ladogeur ran a sterling race in tho National Hurdles, and Bombproof, Retard, and Orane have all got chances. , . ~ There are twenty-four acceptors m the October Handicap, six furlongs. This event is verv open. Good beginners hKO Strategy, Canyon, and Forty Winks have all got'chance's, and so has Martian Miss, who -was noticed finishing very fast at Opaki. The card will conclude with the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs. The best sprinters in the Dominion are engaged in this event,' and favouritism mav rest between Arrowsmith and Tigritiya. Surveyor and. Early Dawn are both expected to run well. Sea Foam mid Moutoa- Ivinova. have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington meeting. To-days scratchiugs include Panache, Hurry Up, and Lord Astolat. Tiie leading horsemen will be mounted as follows to-day :— H. Gray will be on Surveyor, Mermin, and Prince Ferouz. B. DeeleV will steer Karo. C. "Emerson will ride The Hawk, Toa Taua. Maioha. Canyon, and Printemps, M. M'Donnld will have- the mount on Piilestrina. 80-Peep. Astinome, and Pam. M.
