Miss Vallance (Masterton) is visiting Wellington. Amateur theatrical circles should be the richer for the advent in Wellington of Miss Lurlino Dargavillo (neo W-rigloy), whu, though a Wellington lady,' has been absent in Australia for some time. In Sydney Mrs. Dargaville, the possessor of a pleasing contralto voice, played the soubrette parts in "The Dollar Princess, "Tho "Quaker Girl," "The Balkan Princess," "Gipsy Love," "The Sunshine Oivl." and "Our Mis? Gibbs" with the Eastern Suburbs Musical Socintv and the Railway and Tramway Musical Society. Very much interest is attached to the exhibition of the paintings of tho late Mr. J. M. Nairn, which was open™ by the president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (Mr. ,T. The Housewives' Association, a } ictorian women's organisation formed to combat the increasing cost ot living, held a conference last vree/t m Melbourne, l» carried a resolution that: ' As the price of gloves has increased beyond all reasonable bounds, and they are n r " cl{is which can easily be dispensed with, the Housewives' Association pledges ltselt to refrain from-wearing same, and appealb to all women to assist, them. It urges that the Church dignitaries and heads of public schools should help bv discouraging tho wearing of gloves, ti.nd that active propaganda and campaign | • launched with an appeal to the conscience and unselfishness of all classes for assistance in this movement.
Miss Archibald presided at the monthly committee meeting of the Levin Alemorial Home held at the home, Berhainpore. The matron reported during the month there had been a case of measles and one of whooping cough. A Gift Evening, The annual gift evening in connection with the Presbyterian Orphanage was held in St. olin's Schoolroom lost evening. There was a good attendance of friends and well-wishers, and in consequence many gifts in kind, as well as in money wero- received for the benefit of the orphanage. The Rev. Dr.. Gibb presided, and a musical and elocutionary programme, which had been arranged by Madame Monkman Dempster, with tho assistance of Mr. Culford Bell, was much enjoyed. Contributing were the following:—Musical monologue, Miss Moana Mackie and Miss Nellie Knight (Mr/ Culford Bell's pupils); song.-i, Mrs. Edwards. Miss Telford, Miss Reid, Mies Passau. Miss Montier, Miss O'Connor; vocal duot, Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Passau (pupils of Madamo Monkman Dempster). At the closo of tho programme supper was handed around, the arrangements being carried out by tho Indies' Auxiliary, of which Mrs. Gill is the president. A stall for flowers, also in charge of the Ladies' Auxiliary, added to the financial results, and as the high cost of living tell' very heavily upon such work as that carried out at the ornhanose. tho auxiliary who arranged the evening worked/' hard to • stimulate practical interest and sympathy in what is being done there.
