The latest annual report tn the Prisons of New Zealand states:-"The dairy herds at Waikeria and Invercargill both gave fairly good results for the year, the total amount received for butter-fat being .£IOO6 at the former institution and .£lOOl at the latter. The Invercargill Borstal Institution also made a commencement with the stock-fattening industry, as shown by the fact that £1740 was received on accuunt of stock sales. Papavua has again obtained useful returns from the sale of sheep, lambs, and wool, while the area nlanted in wheat also contributed towards the cash receipts for the year." "During the past year a marked improvement has taken place in the standard of industry amongst tho prisoners," stated the. Controller-Gejieral of Prisons in his annual report. "In former years, owing to the uninteresting nature of the work upon which many of the prisoners wore employed, it was found very difficult indeed to get tho men to take an intelligent interest in thoir work. The advent of prison farniß has, however, changed all that, and it is really surprising To note the keen interest taken by tho majority of the inmates in their , daily "work. This, however, is not to be wondered at, and tho prison farm is certainly going to be thcinoans of giving many a man a fresh interest in life.
