THE COST OF LIVING
The land Bill came under discussion in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The Lands Committee recommended that the Bill should .ho allowed l to proceed, and some of the supporters of the leasehold in the House ■took the opportunity to protest against the proposed sale of national endowment land. An allegation that Parliament, has not kept faith with tho lessees of email grazing runs was also debated The opponents of the Bill did not attempt to block it, and the Bill was set down for second reading. A committee of the House recommended for favourable consideration by the Government a petition from Christchurch praying for a reduction in the cost of living Several members had something to say on this subject, the text of their remarks being the high importance of some effective measures to check the rise of prices in this country. When tho House met in the evening, the Primo Minister announced that the Government had decided not to prosecute any conscientious objectors or military defaulters after the second anniversary of the signing of the armistice. This {late is early nest month. '■' The Workers' Compensation Amendment Bill was before the House in the evening, aud was put through Cominftteo and passed before the House rose. Various aspects of the compensation law were discussed. The Minister of labour stated that the Labour members, the employers, and the insurance companies had agreed on the Bill, and he asked that it should be agreed to without emendment. Many members had suggestions to make with regard to accident jiay, industrial insurance, the doctrine of "common employment," and other matters, but the Bill was passed after midnight without material amendment.
