'Albert Roberts, it was stated, went into .the Zenlnndia restaurant, kept by Samuel Andrews, in Courtenay Place,-be-came-offensive, i.nd was •threatening in his behaviour. Me was asked to leave, but this he rcbised ■ to do, and started using obscene language. A constable came on the scene, and advised him to got away out of the place. The constable thought ho had settled the matter, but when he returned about twenty minutes later U.oberts was still 'there, ami musing a disturbance. He was charged with using obscene language, trespassing .in the restaurant,, and assaulting ]?. Riel.- The accused said he had had some liquor, and went into tho lvsluurant for a meal. He was refused
o meal, and somebody asked liim to go nut. Thou somebody pulled him and lie si ruck out and tint started the row. The assault on Frederick Biel took-place in the York billiard room, from which place he had been frequently ordered out. lie. was convicted and fined .£5, in default one month's imprisonment, for using obscene language, and on the other two charges he was convicted and. discharged John S. Jones, pleaded guilty, to being dtiink, using obscene language, resisting Constable White while in the execution of his duty, and assaulting some person unknown. It was stated that Jones had been-previously convicted and'ordered to come up for sentence when called.upon Mi. AV. Perry, who appeared" for Jones, said that during his probation' he conducted himself properly. He. had been working for a. dentist,-and it was his 'intention to start in.business. He .was a married man with two children. The Magistrate said that-accused had been three times before, the Court, and sen-

: Louie Seymour ( a married woman, a resident of Petone (for whom Mr. J. Stevenson appeared) 'pleaded guilty to two charges of ."shop lifting." She. was ■in the- shop of Green and Davis, Lambton Quay, and while waiting to he served she stole 12 handkerchiefs-and a blouse, ■value £1 2s. (id She also visited the shop of Black and Co., where she stole an underskirt and a pair of silk stockings. Mr Stevenson made a strong plea 'for lenient treatment, pointing out that her husband was a respectable, hardworking man, and there were two children. She was convicted and ordered to come up for .sentence when called upon. ' A fireman, James Bavey, while on a drinking bout, went to the Shamrock Hotel, where he stayed for a day or two and. stole, a, hair brush, a comb, and a pair of scissors' (value Ms.),.the property of .Toan Oben, licensee of the hotel. Mr. C A L. Trendwcll appeared for tho accused, and said that the man had a clean record, and bis lapse was due to drinking. Kavey was fined -10s • Stanley 'R. Harvey was convicted of a very mean theft.' While lie was in the bar of an hotel a man named Thomas Smith, a new arrival in the Dominion, tfS£ into the bar He had two English ifbank notes, and Harvey offered to get them cashed. He said he would get ,£G for them, while as a matter of fact he changed the notes for less than .£5, and disappeared with the money. Ho pleaded guilty to the theft of JEM- 18s. Harvey was also charged with obtaining from' oim James' G: G. Griinshaw- the suni of .£3 bv means of a false pretence, 'lie went' to' Grimshaw and represented i that he was in partnership; with a man who was a customer of Grimsliniv's,' and so obtained the £3. Chief Detective AVard said that' Harvey had several previous convictions, and it was alleged-that he was wanted at Hobart;' Harvey was sentenced to two years' reformative treatA liegro, named Edward Ralph Martin, was ; charged that on September 29 he assaulted Minnie' Nipnert,.'also 'that he wilfully damaged a door to the extent of 20s Mr. J. Stevenson appeared r for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. The ■Magistrate refused' to accept, accuseds :'story, and' sentenced him .to a momhs imprisonment 'for the .assault, and 'he •Was ordered ta'paylOs .for the damage to the door, also to enter into a bond of •.£SO to keep'.the..peace. , :■. . •V roniand' to Friday was ■ granted in the: case-of'John MiUanta, who was charged'with stealing a pea -rifle valued at;£2, thcpropcrlyof Alfred Dyer.

BY-lAW CASES . Mr. F K. Huirt, S.M., dealt with, the by-law breaches. ■ For having no number on the rear of their motor-cycles, C Barrett and J. -». Dobson were each fined 10s., and is. Campbell were each fined 20=., and W (f Phvsick was fined 10s, and 7s. costs, for failing to stop his motor-ve ucle when requested to do so by a constable on point
