Palmerston North, October 18. A meeting of the Sub-Provincial Executive of the Mannwatu Fanners Union was held at Levin on Saturday, Air. a. W. Hubbard presiding The secretary and organiser (.Mr. u. Moon) reported that since last meeting h? had visilod' Kaimnsa, Ashhurrt, linten, Kauivhata, Manakau, and Paraparumu districts, and- had. secured .>• new members. -Subscriptions collected amounted to JH2 Hs lid. 'iKpro «s a eiedit balance at the bank of A 126 10=. lid. Nearly JESOO was outstanding in subscriptions. Fresh samples of Uie limestone had been obtained and forwarded' for analysis. . The Minister of Industries and Commerce, in reply to the nmoim protest n'minst tbe continued impov.ation of-As atic egg-pulp, stated that lie had taken nn tho mattT for consideration. P Tn the matter of the lion's siigges ion that in the interests of stock breeder. The Director of the- Government Dairj Division, in reply to a request from the executive to inaugurate a 300-day class under their semi-ollicial test, for pedigree, cows (cows to freshen again under 12 months), such tests to be in addition to the present test of 365 days (cows to freshen again under 15 months), pointed out that so far as tho rules were trained at present* there was nothing to interfere with any breeder testing for only 300 davs if-he so desired-. The. Department, "however, was of tho opinion that in order to improve the producing capacity of New Zealand dairy herds they reruired to produce heifers which wore likely to milk for a longer period than was the case with the average cow nt present. If that were the case they took it that a sire from a strain which had been proved to have tho capacity for milking .165 davs was more- likely to beget progeny which would m.ilk for a longer time than the average. As the CO.fi. work was in co-operation with' breeders only and- not with dairymen, so far as tho' testing of grade and crossbred cows was concerned, it was not so important that the test for purebreds should be for tho shorter period, which would suit' ordinary practical dairy operation. The Department was not declining entries from breeders who might suggest, that they onlv intended to test, for 300 days. The following remits were dealt with:— Kauwhata branch: That every branch of the union throughout the Dominion do immediately start a campaign through the -Press to answer nil correspondence and contradict statements that the farmers are exploiting the public; that information bo gathered from various dairy farmers showing financial results,' of farmin" during a period of five years, and that all farmers allow' Is. Sd. per hour for time worked—Endorsed to go to Provincial Executive . Tiakitalnina: That all meat exported from New Zealand bo 'branded on all quarters and sides with a registered Government brand, under the supervision of n Government expert.—Approved to go to branches.
