A man supposed to bo Reginald Matthews, who escaped from Lyttclton Gno« on September 12, till!), evaded capturein the Dominion Gnrdcns yesterday bi presenting « revolver nt a.gardener, who was about to seize, him. It was believed that after escaping from gaol Matthow'. slipped aboard tho ill-fated Taimii ano perished when the vessel was destroyed by firo off Cheviot four days after his escape. The gardener has no doubts at to the identity of Matthews, having assisted in his arrest for the offence foi which he was sentenced.
