"IN COMMITTEE"
: CITT COUNCIL AND ELECTRICAL CONTROL. Last Thursday's meeting of the City Council did not terminate until after 1 a.m. on Friday, and was one of the longest meetings held for some years past. Little information has yet been given to the Prefs as to what transpired during the three hours the council sat behind closed doors, but iit is stated that, among other tilings, the council discussed a recomiuendaubn. that Mr. M. Cable should 1)0 placed in chargo of the city corporations electrical undertakings (still wider tho City Engineer as general manager, it is understood). This is eaid to have been opposed by several councillors, who contended that placing Mr. Cable in chargo of such works , would relegate Mr. G. Lauchlan (whose administration of the \Elcctrio Light Department was eulogised) to a subordinate position.' Eventually a motion to adjourn tho discussion (in order to have Mr. Liuiahlan'a status under the proposed change more clearly defined) was carried by 9 votes to 7.
Presumably, the matter will come on again for discussion at/the next meeting of the council.
